It borders Turkey in the South, faces the sea in the West, and its northern and eastern territories neighbor the regions of Ozurgeti, Chokhatauri and Adigeni. The territory of Achara equals 30 thousand sq.km; its capital is the city of Batumi, with the population of 136 thousand people, while the entire population of Achara makes 393 thousand. There are 5 administrative regions there: Keda, Kobuleti, Shuakhevi, and Khelvachauri. Batumi is the city of the republican scale and subordination, Kobuleti is the town of regional subordination and there are also 7 other towns of importance: Makhinjauri, Ochkhamuri, Keda, Shuakhevi, Chakvi, Khelvachauri and Khulo. Achara has a perfect geographical location and is rich in natural resources. The territory of Khulevi is extremely fragmented, because the basic part presents a mixture of mountains, foothills and deep canyons. Comparatively small territory belongs to the valleys and lowlands of Kobuleti and Kakhaberi. The climate at the sea-cost zone is subtropical and excessively humid, winter is warm and summer is hot. The climate is humid in the mountainous parts as well. Winter is long and cold there, and summer is short. The amount of atmospheric precipitation is big. The climate of Achara, together with its geographical conditions, is agreeable for the development and spread of subtropical cultures and the resorts infrastructure. Achara is rich in its fauna and flora.
Extractions: May 8, 2003 Released by the U.S. Mission to the OSCE (As delivered) Thank you, Mr. Chairman. The United States is deeply concerned about a shocking situation, that being the continuing violence against Jehovah's Witnesses and other religious minorities in Georgia. The latest episode of violence and intimidation, which was particularly shocking, involves members of the Jehovah's Witnesses and occurred in a Tbilisi courtroom on April 29th during the high-profile trial of political extremist and defrocked Orthodox priest Basili Mkalavishvili. The Jehovah's Witnesses plaintiffs in the case were victimized all over again in a courtroom ostensibly established to provide them with justice. Despite assurances from the Government of Georgia that adequate security would be provided for the trial, Georgian police stood by and laughed as Mkalavishvili and some thirty of his followers went on a violent, prolonged rampage, physically assaulting the lawyer for the Jehovah's Witnesses, those testifying on their behalf, and observers from both the OSCE and Human Rights Watch. Many others present in the courtroom were vilified and threatened, including a journalist from a local television station. An American diplomat and a local employee from the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi attended the trial as observers and were forced to flee the courtroom for their own physical safety and were then harassed by the Georgian police stationed outside.

"No one can force Abkhazia to turn off the road of building an independent state," Vice Premier said. That is how Khadzhimba commented on the statement earlier made by the US government's special representative on Eurasian conflicts issues Rudolf Perina after his meeting with Georgian president Eduard Shevardnadze, which said that the American administration must convince or, at least, force Abkhazia's government to negotiate with the Georgian side on the so called "Boden document".

BizChina Investment Bidding Enterprises Policy update BEIJING, Nov. 27, (Xinhuanet) After Eduard Shevardnadze resigned from presidency, the Republic of Georgia realized a bloodless alternation of regime. Opposition party supporters hailed in the streets of Tbilisi, celebrating the victory of the "velvet revolution". Meanwhile, their leader Nino Burdzhanadze claimed her responsibility as the acting president. On November 24, this woman politician aged only 39 years of age addressed to her national fellows, calling on the people to resume their normal lives and urging judicial institutions to rectify the order. After that, she chaired the meeting of the National Security Council and decided to launch the presidential and parliament elections as soon as possible. Deeply concerned about the situation of the Republic of Georgia, people will not easily forget Eduard Shevardnadze. On the evening of November 23, after Shevardnadze announced his resignation in the Krtsanisi Governmental Residence in suburban Tbilisi, a stream of news about his future, contradictory to each other, came out. Burdzhanadze said that Shevardnadze has been exiled overseas, while the National Movement Party leader Mikhail Saakashvili said that he was still in Georgia. It was not until the evening of November 24, then came reliable news by saying that Shevardnadze has never left the Krtsanisi residential villa.
Extractions: Atskouri Project Home Page The Joint Georgian-Canadian Samtskhe Archaeological Expedition is supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Archaeological Research Centre of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. Excavations have been conducted from 1993 to 1997 within the village of Atskouri, located on the upper course of the Mtkvari river - better known by its Russian name of Kura - which flows down from the Armenian plateau towards the Caspian Sea. The area lay close to the Black Sea, about 100 km away as the crow flies, from which it is separated by a segmented mountain range. Our investigations have, unfortunately, not been able to confirm any of these claims. Houses are built entirely according to local customs and do not make use of any of the materials or plans characteristic of Greek houses, no architectural traces of a pagan sanctuary or of the offerings symptomatic of a cult were found on the site of the cathedral. Local rituals appear overall not to have been affected by Greek practices, with the exception of one burial in which was found a coin (not the one illustrated). Results are not entirely negative, however, since some Greek material, pottery essentially, has been found extending between the 6th and the 2nd century BC proving that as soon as the Greeks had settled on the coast, they established some form of contact with the hinterland. Their influence on local culture whose affinities link it rather with areas to the North and South is negligible.
