Extractions: Guest Book Wine pitchers as large as this one (nearly 20 inches in height) from the Republic of Georgia show the Georgians' high regard for the products of their vineyards. Incised designs of grape leaves decorate the sides and neck of this handsome silver over copper container from the late 19th/early 20th century. The copper shows through the thin silver coating for an interesting patina. Such a pitcher would have been used at the frequent traditional banquets, called supras, an important element of Georgian culture, when toasting marathons with local wines take place. The toastmaster begins these events with toasts on a global level to world harmony, then moves on to toast world leaders, poets, musicians, actors, countries, cities and villages until, several hours later, the individuals at the table begin toasting each other. This server survived the heavy use and is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 19 1/2" (47 cm), diameter 9" (23 cm). Page design by TROCADERO Home Join Shops ... Help
Extractions: Vladimir Mayakovsky, 1924 If the famed Georgian-born poet, Vladimir Mayakovsky, were alive today, he would find that the words from his metaphorical poem, "Vladikavkaz-Tiflis," still holds true as Georgians cling optimistically to their newly independent state. Of course, Georgians have tasted independence before but their history has been plagued by numerous conquerors throughout the centuries. It is the unique geography of Georgia that explains her predicament. Georgia is located between the Black Sea to the west and close to the Caspian Sea to the east. Eighty percent of the land is covered by mountains, mainly the Greater Caucasus Mountains to the north and the Lesser Caucasus Mountains to the south. Between these massive mountain ranges and land-locked seas lay a narrow belt of fertile lowlands that form strategically important east-west and north-south routes between Europe and Asia. Throughout the ages, Greeks, Romans, Parthia, Byzantium, Khazars, Arabs, Genghis Khan, Tamerlane, Persians, the Ottoman Turks and more recently the Russians have sought to control the Georgian kingdom and even today, a power struggle continues as the West seeks a route to access the vast oil reserves of the Caspian region. Although beset by civil war in 1992, Georgia's most amazing trait is the resilience of her people to endure in the face of adversity. Georgians now confront the same challenges of so many of their forefathers to rebuild anew. Great strides have been made but most people are experiencing tremendous economic hardships and living at a standard considerably below pre-independent times. Still, they are an optimistic people who will tell you that they prefer their freedom and have great hopes for their small country to become the "Switzerland" of Eastern Europe. While no one knows what the future holds, Georgia is certainly capable of realizing this dream for she has the natural resources and a tolerant but strong national identity.

Extractions: Georgia Described variously as part of Europe, Central Asia or the Middle East, Georgia has long been a flash point for cultural and geographical collision. Its culture is ancient and built around a vast variety of influences; its people are a mix of traditional and very modern; and the food is legendary. Its weather and landscape are a meeting of east and west. Its history is a lengthy list of empires rising and falling, of invasions, skirmishes, massacres and wars. But it is also a nation of survival, and of great natural, cultural and gastronomic beauty. Georgia is a newly independent nation, and while living conditions are improving, they're not yet at the Western standards desired by the government. Tourist facilities outside of the capital, Tbilisi, are not highly developed and many of the goods and services taken for granted in other countries are not yet available. Despite this, and despite an area in the north of the country being basically off-limits due to separatist control, terrorist activity and an abundance of land mines, Georgia presents a proud face to the world. And as civil unrest calms, the world is beginning to notice. A bloodless coup in late 2003 has left Georgia's security situation uncertain. Travellers are advised to monitor current events and to specifically avoid travelling near the Russian border region, especially Chechnya, Dagestan, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Kabarda-Balkar and Karachay-Cherkessia.
