To fly over the incredible peaks of the Caucasus range, and to ski on the continental divide of Europe and Asia, but most of all to witness first hand the emergence of a brave country and its people from political turmoil and poverty. "Get your Bearings" - After flying over Romania and the Black Sea we caught our first glimpse of what was once the richest state in the Soviet Union. Georgia's seaside resorts and ski areas were popular vacation spots for wealthy Russian families. Now, after a decade of struggle, the country is rebuilding itself. "Get Your Kicks" - The sport of skiing has found it's way into many obscure corners of the glosbe, but Georgia's people and culture make this one of the world's most intriguing, accessible ski destinations. "Get Cultured" - Georgians are known for their traditional hospitality to strangers, this is reflected in the eclectic mix of cultures and religions found in the capital, Tbilisi. Goldstein also gives a fascinating insight into the peculiar love of food and wine by the Georgians. Love the book, love the recipes! If you want some rich food that is different, try this! In my opinion, there are some critical recipes missing mushroom khinkhali, for example. Nonetheless, this is the most comprehensive and best Georgian cookbook I've come across. The cultural information is a delight to read, and the author's recipes for the Georgian spice blends are key to replicating Georgian cuisine.

Extractions: Georgia Georgia is at the junction of Europe and Asia, and this has led to a diverse, moderate culture developing over thousands of years. According to ancient tradition, when God was handing out land to the peoples of the planet, the Georgians were too busy eating and drinking and arrived late. God told them that there was no land left, and the Georgians told him that they had been toasting his health. They invited God to join them, and he had such a wonderful time at the Georgians' table that he gave them all the land he had been saving for himself. Truly God's own country. Food in Georgia is one of the biggest attractions for visitors, and is the centrepiece of domestic cultural activity. Part of this family focus, and an unusual phenomenon for foreign visitors, is Georgian meal-time. Complicated ritual relationships are manifested in it. The table is led by tamada , who proposes traditional toasts throughout the meal. To the outsider, it can seem as though nothing is done before everyone drinks to it. It's best not to toast while drinking beer; it's regarded as a subtle insult. During Soviet rule, Georgian restaurants spread through the republic, and are still favourite haunts for discerning foodies throughout Russia and its former states. Each part of Georgia has its unique cuisine with flavours derived from spice combinations, but as a rule, a focus on herbs and garlic predominates. The only difficulty you will experience buying food will be because the locals are so keen to give it away! Cafes and restaurants mostly serve Georgian and more traditional European food, while fast food restaurants offer local dishes such as khinkali, kabab, barbecue and khachapuri. American-style fast food restaurants serve the usual collection of hot-dogs and hamburgers. For a breakfast with a difference, try the

In 1994 we formed a professional vocal trio dedicated to studying and performing that music. In the years since then, we have performed everywhere from Lincoln Center to the Tbilisi Opera House. We sing concerts and lead workshops in North America, and we have made several extended visits to Georgia to study with singers there, both in professional ensembles and in remote villages. In 1997 each of us was made a State Prize Laureate and was awarded the Silver Medal of the Georgian Ministry of Culture "for profound knowledge of the folk music of Georgia and his role in its popularization around the world."

Extractions: Thursday, 6 December 2001 Mr Ambassador, It is with great pleasure that I welcome you today and accept the Letters of Credence appointing you as the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Georgia to the Holy See. I thank you for the greetings which you bring from President Eduard Shevardnadze, and I ask you to convey to him, to the Government and to the people of Georgia my good wishes and the assurance of my prayers for the peace and prosperity of the nation. Your presence here today, inaugurating a new period of formal diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Holy See, is a most welcome occasion, filled with hope and promise. I am grateful for your words of appreciation of the Holy Sees efforts to build peace and bring reconciliation in the face of what you call "the emergence and growth of old and new tensions in many parts of the world". Through its activity, including its diplomatic activity, the Holy See seeks to help all peoples live a fully human life in peace and harmony, with an eye to the integral development of individuals and nations. You have spoken of Georgias efforts aimed at "strengthening democratic principles... and securing protection for the fundamental freedoms of citizens"; and these principles and freedoms are also central to the Holy Sees perspective on international issues. The Holy Sees approach is distinctive because it is not tied to national interest of any kind, but seeks instead the common good of the whole human family. It is a perspective driven not by ideology, but by a vision of the human person, and a conviction that when this vision is undermined or abandoned the very foundation of human society is shaken. It is a vision of freedom, but of freedom linked to truth in particular, to the truth of the human person, which alone provides a sound basis for constructive political and diplomatic activity. The history of your own nation teaches that freedom is always fragile; and the last century showed dramatically how freedom is eroded once the truth of the human person is denied.

Extractions: OF THE REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA TO THE HOLY SEE Thursday 15 May 2003 Your Excellency, It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Vatican at the beginning of your mission as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Georgia to the Holy See. My visit to your country in 1999 was a particular joy for me. I fondly recall the warmth with which I was received and the fervent ecumenical spirit in which I was able to share. I would ask you kindly to convey to His Excellency President Shevardnadze, and to the Government and people of your noble land, my gratitude for their good wishes, which I reciprocate, and to assure them of my prayers for the nations peace and well-being. The ideals of peace, freedom and justice to which you poignantly refer are essential and interdependent components of genuine progress in any nation. Authentic development must not however become detached from its intrinsic connection with human rights (cf. Sollicitudo Rei Socialis 33). As the people of Georgia know only too well, when these rights rooted in the very nature of the human person are denied, not only is the economic growth of a nation thwarted but the culture itself is undermined and the spirit of the people

Paper #23603 :: The Republic of Georgia Buy and instantly download this paper now A history of the Republic of Georgia since the fall of the U.S.S.R. 1,536 words, 8 sources, MLA, $ 43.95 USD Paper Summary: This paper discusses how the Republic of Georgia is a nation with its own history and now like so many other republics freed after the fall of the Soviet Empire, Georgia is reinventing its past and rediscovering what has been lost, forgotten, or distorted during the years of Soviet rule. It examines the factors that led up to its declaration of independence, the leaders involved, its economy then and now and the direction in which the country is headed. From the paper: "In 1999, Pope John Paul visited the predominantly Orthodox Georgia. However, despite his pleas for closer ties between the two churches, "no Orthodox clergy attended his mass" (Sheets pg). His visit was seen by Georgians as more political than religious, helping to shine the international spotlight on Georgia. In his homily, the Pope expressed, "With its culture, history and faith, Georgia has always looked towards the West and has made its own contribution to Christian Europe" (Sheets pg). He went on to describe Georgia as a "model of respect and tolerance towards other religions and noted that places of worship for Christians, Jews and Moslems stood close together in Tbilisi" (Sheets pg)."
Extractions: I am living in Tbilisi, Georgia and have a part-time cook. I've sat in the kitchen as she prepares dishes for me and basically followed along in the Georgian Feast. With very few exceptions (mainly the spices and herbs we cannot get in the US) her unwritten recipes follow quite closely the ones in the cookbook. The flavors and look of the food I've prepared myself using this cookbook are accurate in comparison to the food I've gotten here! This is a wonderful addition to any international cookbook collection! The problem with reader reviews is that not all readers are reliable. Tatia Vashakidze, the self-described Georgian teenager studying in the U.S., gives this prize-winning book only three stars because she says it lacks her favorite recipes, all of which are in fact included: Khinkali on p. 144 and two recipes for grilled kebabs (identified by their alternate name of basturma instead of mtvadi or kababi) on pp. 84-85.

Extractions: The Georgians are one of the most ancient peoples of the world. In a discovery with profound implications for the study of early human history, paleoanthropologists and archaeologists digging in Dmanisi district (Kvemo Kartli region of Eastern Georgia) have found 1.7 - 1.8 million-years old fossil human skulls (Homo ergaster) that show clear sings of African ancestry and so may represent the species that first migrated out of Africa. Being close to the boundary between Europe and Asia, Georgia might have been a crossroads of dispersal to the west in Europe as well as to southern and eastern Asia. In the 1970's the archaeological excavations on the territory of Eastern Georgia revealed a number of ancient settlements of the 5th millennium B.C. which included houses with galleries. These dwellings were circular or oval in plan, a characteristic feature of which was the central pier and chimney. These features were completely used and further developed in building Georgian dwellings and houses of the "Darbazi" type. Ancient Georgian tribes of Tubal (Tabal) and Meshekh (Mosokh/Meskh) (4th-3rd millennias B.C.) were founders of metallurgy. At the end of the 2nd - begining of the 1st millennium B.C. in the south-eastern region of historical Georgia two major tribal unions arose; that of the Diaokhi (Tao) and the Kolkha, both continuing to the 8th cent. B.C.
Extractions: Mr CHEVARDNADZE, President of the Republic of Georgia, made the following statement: "By no means a stranger to Europe, Georgia has for centuries been cut off from it. Her road to Europe has been one of martyrdom. Here, in this historical centre of the European Reformation and Humanism with their philosophy of individual liberty, I can hardly keep from quoting my fellow-countryman, an outstanding philosopher: "To me, European culture is the maximal approximation to the concept of the purpose of man. And if the design of the universe is the humanisation of the individual, then Europe has come closest to the realisation of this ideal." Four years ago, at the time the Vienna Declaration was adopted, we were infinitely removed from the above criterion. I stood then on another podium, if one may use the word to describe a position on the battlefield, amid the fire of civil wars, internal conflicts and the terror of criminal political cliques, in other words, in the midst of a battle fought against yet another attempt to destroy Georgia's statehood. Georgia did not lose that battle.

Following closing ceremonies and the lowering of the Georgian, British and American flags, all staff and campers boarded buses and returned to Tbilisi safely. A total of 59 diabetic children including some unexpected arrivals had enjoyed an unforgetaqble recreational and educational experience making new friends, meeting old ones, hiking, playing games, doing arts and crafts, and learning about diabetes. All are looking forward to a great 1999 diabetic camp. As a result of the 1996 and 1997 camps, the Government of the Republic of Georgia is now providing all its 600 + diabetic children with blood glucose meters and test strips, a result never dreamed of two years ago. The LIONS-ACTS Georgia Diabetic camp has now completed its first eight days. The diabetic education is progressing well with discussions having been given on several subjects related to diabetes and its care. As part of their diet therapy the campers are now learning to weigh their food exchanges. The weather has been beautiful and hikes each morning are enjoyed by all. The highlight to date have been the hike Saturday up Kokhta mountain (translated "pretty mountain") about 1500 feet above the camp and the trip Sunday to the eleventh century Kimothesubani church near Tsagveri. There are only two days remainingh in this experience and then we will all return to Tbilisi and on to our homes.
