Many of Florida's reptiles are rare or are experiencing serious population declines. Habitat destruction, over-collecting, and deliberate or accidental killing have threatened several species with extinction. Florida has enacted laws to help protect certain animals and to ensure the survival of healthy populations . Eastern Coral Snake Florida has more species of non-venomous snakes than any other state east of Texas. There are only 6 species of venomous snakes in Florida, so the venomous snakes are relatively rare. Southwest Florida's non-venomous snakes come in a variety of sizes and colors and are found in every habitat, including the backyard. However, many of Florida's snakes are becoming far less common, and some are now protected by law.

NATURAL HISTORY Wildlife Northwestern Belize has a high diversity of wildlife due to extensive areas of intact natural habitat and relatively low levels of human disturbance. The wide range of fauna reflects the diversity of Northern Belize's many habitats.
