This book, however, is what I've been looking for, especially to recommend to new newt owners who complain that they haven't been able to find a helpful book in this admittedly sparse field. It's got a lot of information for beginners, and stuff that, though fascinating, is often left out of books about newts for example, a summary of the evolutionary history and fossil record of amphibians. The list of mail-order food supply houses is particularly helpful for those without easy access to waxworms and frozen pinkies. Amphibians: Their Care and Keeping The word amphibian comes from the Greek words meaning two lives. Amphibians are animals that, with only a few exceptions, spend part of their life in water, and part on land. Scientists so far have identified more than 4,500 species of amphibians. Frogs are probably the best-known amphibians.

    Extractions: Ewwww! "How did you get into boas?!" We get that a lot, or for me (Debbie), being treated as an unusual specimen for being a girl who likes snakes and especially big boas. To begin with, I wanted to get an aquarium and start keeping freshwater tropical fish. So my husband decided that if I was going to do that, he wanted an iguana. We got a special deal on three from a local pet store and our iguana family grew from there. Down the road, we decided that iguanas were quite a bit of work and time to keep properly so we eventually sold them or found homes for them. We did really enjoy them a lot and found them to be much more intelligent than one would ever believe. While we still had a few iguanas, my son, who was about 14 at the time, talked me into going into a gag or joke gift shop that was below a reptile specialty store. The owner of the shop had a boa in the store that was 4-5 ft. long. My son was holding the snake and wanted me to hold it. I was NOT thrilled at all with the prospect but I had to keep up my tomboy reputation with my son, so I petted and touched it. It felt silky and smooth, to my great surprise, and it was a very handsome sandy tan with peach coloring. She looked me calmly in the eye and flicked her tongue on my nose and I fell in love. I went home and told my husband (Jack) that I wanted to get a boa with peach coloring like that one and with a bit of a shudder, he said, "No way, NEVER in this house!" Well, I won him over and he soon became more obsessed than I in his interest in boas. (Every time he's said "Never!" it comes to pass and I tease him about being careful not to say that!)

    Extractions: This is a great book if you are a beginner turtle owner. Covers almost ever aspect of turtle care, from intial care to "training" your turtle. Could have been a bit more in-depth and detailed on cerain topics (e.g. the species guide) though. Also some of the ideas put forward seem to be a little out-dated or "incorrect" depending on what website you visit (e.g. hibertation in a fridge). One should supplement this book with reseach from other sources, especially the Internet.All in all a great... This book is excellant! The text is thorough, and the illustrations are phenomenal. There is virtually no stone left unturned. Every question concerning the husbandry and natural history of rhacodactylus is explored and explained. The authors attention to detail is unmatched. This book is a must have for any person whom wants to own, or already owns any species of rhacodactylus, novice and expert alike.
