Extractions: History of tapestries Tapestries have depicted themes of time and place for 700 years. During the first 400 years, weavers were patronized by wealthy nobility who wanted medieval tapestries depicting nature, peasant life, war, consorts with the gods, hunting, and religion. Tapestry themes changed with the rise of the merchant class. Tapestry subjects varied from the romantic (as perpetuated by the court of Louis XIV) to tranquil landscapes, called verdures, to decorative and fanciful grotesques. At the height of tapestry popularity, entire rooms or 'chambers' of tapestries were decorated with woven wall hangings, window and door tapestries, and tapestry upholstery for furniture. Extractions: t Medieval Reproductions, we strive to provide the highest quality in our products. We produce carefully researched, historically accurate reproductions of medieval arms, armour, and artwork. Our scope is not just medieval, however, we have created pieces ranging from Roman to Renaissance. We also produce period costumes, accessories, Medieval and Renaissance tapestries, and furniture, as well as architectural embellishments. We have twenty-one years of experience producing arms and armour, and have provided pieces for discerning clients such as the Glenbow Museum (Calgary), the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto), the Canadian War Museum (Ottawa),and the Higgins Armory Museum (Worcester, Mass.). We have also provided rental items for television, film and magazine. If you have a specific need, we will be happy to custom make any piece to meet that need. ll of the prices given for our helmets in our on-line catalogue are for constructed versions (helmets made from two pieces welded together), however, we offer helmets raised from a single piece. Please contact us for price information on raised helmets. All of our other armour components are also raised (such as breasplates, couters, poleyns, etc.) at the prices indicated in the on-line catalogue. Raising is a technique that leaves the metal the same thickness at the apex of the piece. Many modern armourers use a method called dishing, which stretches the metal, and leaves it thinner at the highest point. Raising is a more historically accurate method of armour-making.
