    Extractions: One role that was rarely encouraged for women was that of the artist. The requirements of artistic training­such as drawing nude studies­and the social unacceptability of such a career, combined with the economic restrictions of guild membership, allowed little capacity for female artists to flourish. The few documented female Renaissance artists were either daughters of artists who trained in their fathers' workshops or children of noblemen, who were expected to have fairly accomplished literary, musical, and artistic skills. Although records indicate that they were talented, these women frequently ended their artistic careers when they married, concentrating their oeuvre on subjects considered proper for women artists: portraits and pictures of family members in domestic settings. Although these skilled artists were well-known in the Renaissance, contemporary accolades were qualified. These women contended with many diminutions and stereotypes of their talent and skill. Contemporaries either lauded them as exceptions to their gender, even miracles of nature; denounced them as overly sexualized and even deviant because of their independence and self-confidence; or emphasized their womanly virtue, intact virginity, and chastity. Tintoretto's abilities were belittled and explained away as a labor similar to childbirth, and Fontana was criticized when she began expanding her career by winning public commissions. These previously neglected women's lives and art works have been rediscovered in recent years by art historians seeking to acknowledge women artists in the Renaissance, including the publication of monographs on Anguissola, Fontana, and the Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi.

Increasingly sophisticated techniques of engraving made possible the production of minutely detailed illustrations, illustrations moreover that were not just a decoration but were themselves devices for teaching and for exposition. The fruit of the new techniques can be seen in scientific treatises as well as in the pattern books for architects or prints made from paintings. And as with art and architecture, so with science, we have to be wary of arguing for a simple one way relationship between the world of the ancients and that of Renaissance Europe. Interaction between the two was characterised more by a process of cultural negotiation than slavish emulation. Dioscorides' Materia Medica (1st century AD) for example, provides a model for many 16th-century herbals, but was nonetheless open to criticism on many fronts. This became particularly evident as knowledge of the exotic plant life of northern Europe and the New World - all absent from Dioscorides' original compilation - found its way into the pioneering work of German, Flemish and Dutch botanists. Antique sources also offered the means of conferring prestige on occupations hitherto denied professional status. The anatomist for example, was long held as inferior to the university educated physician, because his 'manual' labours were seen as subsidiary to the main purpose of medicine. From the mid-16th century onward, however, the professional status of the anatomist underwent radical improvement, largely as a result of Vesalius's ground breaking study of the human body, which sought to invoke the authority of classical physicians, such as Galen.

We are having a guild workshop this weekend to prepare for Fair Oaks. It will be held at the Eckman's property in Rio Linda. The address is 7409 8th St., Rio Lina, CA 95673 . You can contact Amanda and I on her cell at 916.203.1467, and Steve and Julie Johnson at 916.613.1563. The workshop will run Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We will be preparing our additional shade structures, repairing equipment, making arrows, smithing, etc. There is space for camping and we'll be setting up a range. Bring food and drink! The feast at faire on Saturday seems to be quite popular, so we've come up with a fairly extensive menu. We need $5 a person to help cover groceries, and help in the kitchen is always welcome.
