His war, the one to end all wars, now just a fading part of history. Very few could remember, first-hand, the savageness of the ordeal that had sent millions of young men to their deaths. Cannon fodder, they'd called them, sent before the guns to be mown down blown apart by chunks of metal which had decimated their frail bodies. The cream of a generation; almost wiped out. He was haunted by the faces of the boys he'd had to order into battle, the ones who'd never come back. Yet one nameless ghost was able to bring a measure of comfort to his tormented mind. At the sound of the gun signaling the eleventh hour he was mentally transported back to the fields of Flanders. The battle had raged for over two hours, with neither side gaining any advantage. Wave after wave of soldiers had been dispatched from the muddy trenches and sent over the top. So many had died already that day that he decided he could not afford to lose any more men before reinforcements arrived. Perhaps they'd give the remnants a few more days of life. There came a slight lull in the battle due to the sheer exhaustion of the men on both sides. During this interval, a young soldier came up to him requesting that he be allowed to go over the top. He looked at the boy who couldn't have been more than nineteen. Was this extreme bravery in the face of the enemy or was the soldier so scared he just needed to get it over with?

Extractions: ARMISTICE DAY OR REMEMBRANCE DAY On November 11, 1918 in a railway carriage just outside Compiegne, France, World I ended with the signing of an armistice agreement. A Remembrance Day of some sort is generally held in most parts of the world, in honor of the bravery and loyalty of those who fought to bring peace and to protect their countries and loved ones. It is traditional hat three minutes of silence be observed in memory of the victims of war and the declaration of peace. During World War I, fierce fighting took place in Flanders, Belgium. Despite the land laid barren and black from war, the spring would bring a carpet of blood-red poppies. A Canadian artillery officer and doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, authored the famous In Flanders' Field poem which soon became the soldiers' anthem. Each November, Canada remembers their dead by wearing poppies made and distributed by veterans. They are purchased as a donation to help the needy ex-service people and their families. During the ceremonies, it is customary for a lone bugler to play "Last Post", followed by two minutes of silence. The Reveille is played to signify the memory of the dead lives on and therefore, life triumphs over death.
Yom HaShoah Holocaust Remembrance Day Yom HaShoah Holocaust remembrance day. Holocaust Memorial day, is a relatively recent addition to the Jewish calendar. Its observances http://yom-hashoah.123holiday.net/
Extractions: Yom HaShoah begins in the evening, according to the Jewish calendar. Throughout Israel, all places of entertainment are closed, except those featuring special programs on the Holocaust. In the evening a siren is sounded throughout the country, and all stand for two minutes of silence to reflect upon the tragedy. Ceremonies usually feature the lighting of memorial candles, and a presentation by a survivor. Sometimes memorial prayers are recited, and poems, writing, and other artwork of victims of the Holocaust are displayed. Often names of victims are read aloud, along with programs on the destroyed Jewish communities of the Holocaust.

But up until now, only service personnel have been invited to take part in the march past the London Cenotaph during the official Remembrance Day commemorations. But, as Nick Clarke reports that is about to change. Until now the march past the Cenotaph in London's Whitehall has been primarily for war veterans who've served their country. Over the years many other groups have felt excluded. Among them the Women's' Land Army representing the 200-thousand women who worked the land to feed the nation during the Second World War. And firemen who tackled the blazes of the London Blitz have also long believed their members should be recognised.

A Day to Remember.... by Allyeggpop Permanent Link Sometimes I worry that November 11 will slowly be engulfed by time. I know many other people feel that many Canadians do not give Remembrance Day the respect that it deserves. I heard a fantastic song today on CBC which really encapuslated my feelings. Its called "A Pittance of Time" "A Pittance of Time" and I'm sure many people have had similar experiences to this. I remember in high school in Ajax, asking the teacher why the school didn't really do anything for Remembrance Day. (all they did was play a really bad recording of taps over the P.A., and have the one minute of silence.) She said that if we had a school assembly it would seem to be more of a break from classes, and we would treat it as fun. (Sure as opposed to calculus!?) It also annoys me that nothing closes outside of banks, and gov't institutions. But really, if things were closed I know most people would probably go to the mall etc. and not visit the local war memorials.
