Ashton The Nihongi continues where the Kojiki finishes, cataloguing the descent of the Yamato rulers of Japan from the Gods, to the date of 697 AD. In this sense, the Nihongi, as with the Kojiki, represents a mixture of an open political agenda with a sometimes mixed groups of folkloric tales and mythological happenings. The Nihongi itself was completed around 720 AD, and played an important role in the reshaping of Japan by the Yamato rulers, not least in the naming of the country as Nippon . And although the Nihongi itself is neither held to be a canon of any kind, it's subsequent effect on Japanese identity, in conjunction with the Kojiki, has been extremely powerful.     Extractions: A Brief Glossary Tanakh Targum Septuagint Midrash (exposition) is a rabbinic commentary on the Bible that explains legal points (primarily, midrash halakah) or brings out lessons by story, parable, or legend (primarily, midrash aggadah). The midrashim were written from the Mishnaic period to the 13th c. Midrash Rabbah is an anthology of midrashim on the Bible, divided by book (hence, Genesis Rabba, Leviticus Rabba, etc.) The anthology covers the Torah and the megillot. Midrash ha-Gadol Midrash Tehillim Masorah designates the body of traditions that are printed in the margins of the Hebrew Bible to guide the reader. Talmud Mishnah Gemara is the commentary on the Mishnah that was codified in the two (three for the Babylonian Talmud) centuries after 200 CE. In addition to legal matters, it includes large sections of midrash, aggadah, stories about rabbis, medical advice, science, etc. Halakhah designates all legal discussions. Aggadah Tosefta ("addition") is that collection of tannaitic teachings that supplements the Mishnah. It is four times as long as the Mishnah but divided into the same sections.     Extractions: Misnamed "The Book of the Dead" by Arab workers who helped the early Egyptologists in their excavations, the correct translation for this religious text is "The Book of Coming Forth by Day". Unlike our modern myths that the spirits of the dead come out only at night, the Ancient Egyptians believed that the "Ka" or double came out in the daytime. Contained within this text are several common themes that run parallel to Judeo-Christian teachings. Whether the Egyptians borrowed from their Hebrew captives or the Israelites refined Egyptian beliefs will likely never be fully known. Consider the following words spoken by the deceased as he addresses the gods in the Hall of Judgement. "I have given bread to the hungry, water to the thirsty, clothes to the naked, and a boat to one without a boat" And later in the text, in the portion that has come to be known as the "Negative Confessions", we find the rudiments of the 10 Commandments. "I have not impoverished the masses . . . .I have not caused pain. I have not caused anyone to weep. I have not killed. I have not commanded anyone to kill. I have not done that which is harmful to anyone. I have not committed adultery . . . I did not add to the weight of the balance . . . I have not taken milk from the mouths of children."

Staver WESTFIELD, MASS - In response to a federal court order, Westfield High School has now adopted a policy which protects the distribution of religious literature. Earlier this year Judge Frank Freedman issued an injunction against the Westfield Public Schools, prohibiting the school from disciplining six students who distributed candy canes with a religious message to their fellow students. The students, all members of the L.I.F.E. Bible Club at Westfield High School, are represented by Mathew D. Staver, President and General Counsel of Liberty Counsel, and Erik W. Stanley, Litigation Counsel for Liberty Counsel. On March 17, 2003, Judge Freedman issued a 67-page opinion declaring the school policy and practice unconstitutional. Following the decision, the school removed any disciplinary action from the students' files and recently adopted a new school policy which Liberty Counsel assisted in drafting. It is worth noting that when the state of Massachusetts filed its report in April to the U.S. Department of Education regarding state schools and their compliance with the Guidelines on Constitutionally Protected Prayer in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools, it noted that not all state schools were in compliance. One of these schools was obviously Westfield High School. Now that this new policy has been adopted, the school has come into compliance with the Guidelines.
