    Extractions: A religious liberties law firm threatened Wednesday to sue over a public school's refusal to let a third-grader give classmates fliers saying candy canes are hard because Jesus Christ is "the Rock of Ages." Eight-year-old Jonathan Morgan, a student at Thomas Elementary School in Plano, had asked for permission to pass out "The Legend of the Candy Cane" — along with the red-striped candy — at a holiday party in his classroom Friday. However, school officials told him no student is allowed to offer a gift containing a religious expression, according to the nonprofit Liberty Legal Institute. The Plano-based firm was retained by the boy's parents, Doug and Robin Morgan. Volokh seems to think that "if claims are accurate [they are] still a violation of the Free Speech Clause, the Free Exercise Clause, and ... the Establishment Clause." I disagree. Never mind the fact that the story the boy wants to pass out isn't even true . The part that Volokh leaves out is that the boy has only been prevented from handing out the literature as a part of class activity Plano schools spokeswoman Nancy Long said district policy forbids students from passing out such materials.

    Extractions: The Marian miracle tale, which proliferated widely during the thirteenth century, needs to be considered within the specific framework provided by social and Church history. Isolated from that intertext, it can seem to be a hopelessly sentimental and doctrinally exaggerated literary form designed to palliate or fascinate a gullible and unsophisticated audience. Claims made in the tales for the extreme even indulgent intercessional grace of the Virgin Mary cannot be supported scripturally and the apostrophic style of many tales can appear idolatrous. Sometimes especially in the work of the thirteenth-century French monk Gautier de Coinci the tales are characterized by an only slightly concealed eroticism and show clear parallels with the amour courtois tradition of the troubadours. At other times, for example in Gonzalo de Berceo's El Clerigo Simple, Mary appears as an enraged divinity, even threatening death to a bishop who has harshly cast out a simple missacantano who was unable to learn any mass except the "missa de la Sancta Maria."

    Extractions: After the defeat of Charles, Parliament was anxious to provide sufficient ministers of the gospel to reach those areas of the country they deemed sufficiently in need, Wales being perhaps on top of their list. In 1650 was passed the Act for the Better Propagation and Preaching of the Gospel, appointing many prominent government officials as Commissioners in Wales. Their job, and they carried out their duties most efficiently if not ruthlessly, was to investigate complaints against the resident clergy (who had mostly supported Charles), following the doctrine of "Divine Right", and to eject those they considered unsuitable or disloyal. They also appointed "godly and painful men" to replace those who were deprived of their livings. The Welsh congregations seemed to take most of the changes in their stride. Puritan doctrines had been taking root in many of the urban centres and market towns, aided and abetted by wealthy London merchants. Since having their own Bible in 1588, in any case, the Welsh were fast becoming a "people of the Book," and they welcomed the travelling clergymen who appealed to their sense of religious independence for one thing, and who preached to them in their own language, for another. Fervent evangelists had a great and lasting influence, such as William Wroth and Walter Cradock, with Vavasor Powell, who advocated public hymn singing, the most dynamic preacher and recruiter of them all.
