Extractions: The Museums of Mayo are involved in the collection, preservation and exhibition of aspects and artefacts of many aspects of our past which, individually and cumulatively, form an invaluable resource in representing and preserving our unique experience for present and future generations. The artefacts displayed in the different institutions reflect various aspects of rural life. Visual aids help to give us some understanding of particularly important themes, such as Rural Economy, Famine, Religion and Local History, and their impact on contemporary rural life, while the focus on Genealogy provides a framework for the detailed researching of individuals and families. Agriculture has been central to the survival of the rural economy throughout Ireland's history. Various factors combined to reduce the holdings of land to the subsistence level that pertained throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth century. However, small-holdings were marked by people's necessity to be as self-sufficient as their means allowed. Both men and women contributed to the operation of the small farm. The men built their dwellings, but women helped with the important tasks of ploughing the land, growing and saving crops, saving turf and tending the farm animals. Women maintained the constant supply of the kitchen garden's supply of vegetables, kept poultry to assist with the family finances, wove and sewed cloth to provide clothes and cooked the meals for the family and farm animals. Families tended to intermarry in small communities and the close relationship of the families fostered an interest in the communal welfare. Meitheals, or groups of able-bodied men and women, combined to help the less well-off, particularly destitute widows, with the necessary seasonal farm work.

Museu de Arte Sacra da Bahia This museum in a beautifully restored 17th-century convent displays sacred art such as sculptures and images in wood, clay and soapstone. Many of the artifacts came from Portugal in the early years of settlement of Salvador and the Bahia.

The most negative effects of this decay are to be found in the world of culture. The present period in the history of capitalism is characterised, among other things, by the absence of any great artistic creations, original thinking or philosophy. It is a period of extreme shallowness, intellectual poverty and spiritual emptiness - a period in which a George W. Bush can become the President of the most powerful nation on earth and Jeff Koons is considered to be an artist of stature. The American pop-artist Jeff Koons may not represent the pinnacle of artistic genius, but his productions certainly make a lot of money. Recently somebody sold a statue of Koons called Michael Jackson and Bubbles which depicts the famous pop singer in the company of a monkey. The purchase price of this modern masterpiece was a mere $250,000 in 1991, but it was later sold for $5.6 million. Thus a shrewd investor made a handsome profit over just ten years for a modest outlay. With such profits to be made from "art", why should anyone in their right mind bother with productive investment? Reporting on this outstanding achievement the London Evening Standard (March 28, 2003) wrote: "Contemporary pieces are by far the best performing sector of the art market at present." Extractions: n the occasion of the centenary of the conclusion of the Archaeological concession Treaty between Iran and France (1897-1997), an exhibition, under the heading Jacques De Morgan's mission, was held in Louvre Museum in Paris. The exhibition began on October 15, 1997 for three months. On behalf of the government of his country Jacques de Morgan, a French archaeologist entered into negotiations with the king of Iran (Mozaffareddin Shah) and signed a treaty on May 15, 1897, according to which archaeological excavations were entrusted to France. In the above exhibition one can see the biography, history and the missions of De Morgan to various parts of the world, the original copy of the Archaeological Treaty signed by Mozaffareddin Shah in French and Farsi, the miniatures of faces of Qajar kings, De Morgan's excavations in Malaysia, Armenia and Iran. Furthermore, paintings of Pascal Coust (a French painter) of Iran, paintings of Susa excavations and other French archaeological activities are seen in the exhibition.
