Extractions: This review is part of the news.groups.reviews archives Started over two years ago as a joke, this newsgroup has become a very serious discussion area with the possibility of affecting the entire internet through legal precedent. The groups has two sides of the raging debate: the Scientologists who claim their religion is being attacked, and the sceptics or critics of Scientology, who see it as a dangerous, mind-bending cult out to end democratic ideals and attack the constitutions of the western world. The legal issues now coming to the fore include letters from Scientology lawers being sent out to put a stop to critical posts; a now-infamous "Elaine Siegel" letter, which desribes how to effectively shut down a.r.s. The lawyers are gathering, and watch for a test-case on the right to post on the internet or usenet to come from a.r.s. This group's debates concern everyone who uses usenet, as the action in a.r.s. is bound to spill out to the real world and affect net-surfers everywhere. Cogito, ergo sum. Extractions: Faculty of Divinity, Centre for Advanced Religious and Theological Studies Theology and Religious Studies, like many other subjects, has seen a rise in interest over the past decade in what was formerly known as 'feminist' or 'women's' studies - a subject that is more accurately called 'gender' studies. The Faculty of Divinity has scholars of international renown in all branches of Christian theology as well as a growing and distinguished team of lecturers in the fields of Jewish, Islamic and Hindu studies. An increasing number of research students would like to work on projects which fall within one of the more traditional branches of Theology or Religious Studies, but which will involve gender studies as well. To assist such students, wherever their principal focus lies, the Faculty would like to create a post in Gender and Religion as soon as it has the funding to do so. The primary need is for someone who can, within a young field, develop and direct research. This post would, therefore, be at the level of Assistant Director of Research, whose principal responsibilities would lie, within CARTS, in the development of research in religious aspects of gender studies and in helping the present lecturers direct the studies of the increasing number of graduate students (both at doctoral and M.Phil. levels) who wish to work on projects in this area. In addition, it is hoped that the ADR would be able to offer assistance with undergraduate teaching and so broaden the courses available at this level.

The law insists that all such work is licensed, that the licences are awarded by an impartial body (the Home Office), that some analysis of the benefits to be gained is weighed against the cost in terms of animal lives and that there is a system of public accountability as shown by the annual publication of the statistics and the report of the Animal Procedures Committee. The SIMR Andrew Blake Tribute Award 2004 Pronouncements about this subject are always accompanied by a long tradition of concern for animal welfare, or statements which make it clear that medical research must be conducted with a high degree of concern for the welfare of the animals. Extractions: Of the Religion of Deism Compared with the Christian Religion Every person, of whatever religious denomination he may be, is a DEIST in the first article of his Creed. Deism, from the Latin word Deus, God, is the belief of a God, and this belief is the first article of every man's creed. It is on this article, universally consented to by all mankind, that the Deist builds his church, and here he rests. Whenever we step aside from this article, by mixing it with articles of human invention, we wander into a labyrinth of uncertainty and fable, and become exposed to every kind of imposition by pretenders to revelation. The Persian shows the Zend-Avesta of Zoroaster, the lawgiver of Persia, and calls it the divine law; the Bramin shows the Shaster, revealed, he says, by God to Brama, and given to him out of a cloud; the Jew shows what he calls the law of Moses, given, he says, by God, on the Mount Sinai; the Christian shows a collection of books and epistles, written by nobody knows who, and called the New Testament; and the Mahometan shows the Koran, given, he says, by God to Mahomet: each of these calls itself revealed religion, and the only true Word of God, and this the followers of each profess to believe from the habit of education, and each believes the others are imposed upon. But when the divine gift of reason begins to expand itself in the mind and calls man to reflection, he then reads and contemplates God and His works, and not in the books pretending to be revelation. The creation is the Bible of the true believer in God. Everything in this vast volume inspires him with sublime ideas of the Creator. The little and paltry, and often obscene, tales of the Bible sink into wretchedness when put in comparison with this mighty work.

SHiPS Teachers' Network NEWS Science religion. How should we view the relationship between science andreligion? Nearly everyone has an opinion about science and religion. http://www1.umn.edu/ships/religion/
Extractions: for Sociology, History and Philosophy in Science Teaching Editor's Introduction Diluvial Geology Galileo's Condemnation James Hutton ... Michael Faraday Resources Links H ow should we view the relationship between science and religion? How should that affect how we teach science? This special section of the SHiPS website offers several case studies that both suggest ways to ease the tension between science and religion and, at other times, sharpen the distinction. Historically at least, the relationship is far from simple. Here, you will find questions and cases to provoke student thinking, rather than arguments about how science triumphs in a presumed battle with religion. Indeed, many cases were selected to show how the common "either-or" dichotomy is problematic. In the 20th century, the intersection of science and religion has ignited significant conflict in the schoolsepitomized most notably by the Scopes "monkey" trial that inspired the drama, Inherit the Wind . The two perspectives have not always been viewed as antithetical, though. At the peak of the Scientific Revolution in Europe, for example, the Book of God and the Book of Nature were seen as complementarywith neither having primary authority. In non-Western traditions, conflict between science and religion rarely arises with the severity seen in the West: why? Is there something distinctive about Western (or Christian) concepts of religionor of science? This contrast alone may offer a broad perspective from which to begin discussion. Is there a conflict? How would we know? Students deserve the opportunity to explore the relationship in the context of a science class.

Tell me what you think a good book on Spiritualism should have, what you'd like to see. Or things that should be avoided. Either way, I definitely appreciate your input Second, I'm considering publishing a bound copy of Spiritualist Basics Would you be interested in purchasing a copy if it became available? YES I would or NO thanks Note: Your email address will never be given or sold to anyone. You have my honest-to-God word on it. Joe Thanks for your response! The term "Spiritualism" has been used very loosely, covering a wide variety of psychic phenomena, philosophy, and spirit communication. This site is focused on the religion of Spiritualism. Spiritualism is a wonderfully non-dogmatic religion, science, and philosophy. Spiritualism invites you to doubt, question, and "prove it" for yourself. Without making you change your religion and sell everything you own. However, many people are unclear as to what Spiritualism is really about. How can it possibly be a religion, philosophy and a SCIENCE? How can you make a religion out of "psychic readings"? Do Spiritualists believe in God, or is this just some satanic thing?
