Vocabulary plays an important part in learning to read. As beginning readers, children use the words they have heard to make sense of the words they see in print. The makers of the SAT are changing how their test works, and the issue of grammar not being taught is at the core of the debate about many of the changes they want to make. (So is the stupid debate about questions that depend on cultural knowledge.) Some schools are going back to grammar just in case the new questions in 2005, (which aren't even finished), rely too much on terms of art. The new SAT threatens to introduce lots of terms of art in mathematics and language. How many of the grammar advocates have children and demanded their 1 year old learn grammar rules before allowing them to speak? You don't teach a child crazy rules, you teach them through example. Later, someday maybe, connect the rules with what has become second nature.... It is for this reason I've always been against doing "baby talk" to babies. I believe it is a leading cause of speech impediments later in life. The need to hear good normal correct speech from day one. When I was in eigth grade, I already tested as having a university graduate level of reading. When I took Latin in 9th grade, the course was entirely based on grammar, and I flunked it miserably. It was taught entirely based on grammar terms that I didn't know. I received very high grades in English, especially in composition and spelling, but teaching Latin solely by focus on grammar made it nearly impossible for me.

Certainly, this book supports that assertion. Although the book is primarily a methods text, it is political as well as pedagogical, for it explicitly advocates a social view of language and a rigid if not radical workshop approach to the teaching of writingan approach that Williams terms pragmatic. As a result, the book is stimulating reading. I was thoroughly engaged and occasionally defensive as I read it. It is also informative. I found the chapters on grammar, stylistics, reading, and English as a Second Language especially strong. Furthermore, Williams writes well: his style is clear and direct, his voice personal and unpretentious. In general, this book is useful for anyone who wants to know about the workshop approach to the teaching of writing. As a general methods text, however, the book has several limitations. Because the book is designed for both graduate and undergraduate students, one of its problems is with audience. Although Williams states that his intended audience is primarily students pursuing a public school teaching credential, he is clearly writing for college as well as public school teachers. Even though most of his examples are taken from or designed for elementary and secondary classrooms, the theories he addresses, the research he cites, and the methods he advocates are more appropriate, or certainly more feasible, for college teachers. For example, the chapter entitled Assessing Writing explains only two methodsholistic grading by the students themselves and portfolio grading which necessitates a group of instructors working together. I doubt that many public school teachers would be free to practice either of these options.

At the outset there existed a conviction that the modern mind could not be so degenerate as to be incapable of reading Latin as the Romans read it, that is to say, in the Roman order, in the Roman medium, and at a rate of speed which would not be intolerably slow in the reading of a modern tongue. The nature of the aim dictated the method to be employed; and the employment of the method proved the soundness of the original conviction. The writer has for some years intended to publish an account of this method, as it has shaped itself in practical experience with successive classes. First, however, he desired to present it orally before a number of gatherings of teachers. As a beginning, accordingly, the address with the pamphlet opens was read before the Holiday Conference of the Associated Academic Principals of the State of New York, held in Syracuse in December last. The interest with which the paper was received was so kindly, and the requests that it be published without further delay were so pressing, that it seemed best not to hold to the former intention. The pamphlet has not the form which was first intended, namely, that of plain exposition; for in spite of the iteration of the personal pronoun, the form of direct appeal and explanation natural to an address proved to have its advantages. It has been necessary, however, to add to the address a considerable supplement.
