Extractions: NOTE: The famous "Sutra on the Contemplation of Buddha Amitayus" (or simply, "Contemplation Sutra") is revered as canonical by all Pure Land Buddhists, and is one of the Three Sutras of Pure Land Buddhism, the others being the Larger Sukhavati-vyuha Sutra and the Smaller Sukhavati-vyuha Sutra . In the Contemplation Sutra, the Nembutsu (Namo Amida Butsu) is specifically proclaimed as the avenue to liberation of suffering beings from samsara. This English translation by J. Footnotes from the original edition are dated and have thus been eliminated. A reprint of the unaltered and fully annotated translation exists in Dover paperback. PART I. 1. Thus have I heard: At one time the Buddha dwelt in Rajagriha, on Vulture Peak, with a large assembly of Bhikkhus and with thirty-two thousand Bodhisattvas, with Manjushri the Dharma-Prince at the head of the assembly. Day after day he visited the king. The World-Honored One sent also his worthy disciple Purna to preach the Dharma to the king. Thus a period of three weeks passed by. The king showed in his expression that he was happy and contented when he had an opportunity of hearing the Dharma as well as of enjoying the honey and flour.

Blooms Taxonomy questions. This type of reading for literal comprehension is oftenemphasized because of the ease and equity of evaluation. The http://www.ops.org/reading/blooms_taxonomy.html
Extractions: PURPOSE To apply Bloom's theory of developing higher levels of thought processes to everyday classroom reading. EXPLANATION Many students are directed to read narrative or expository selections for classroom assignments for the purpose of answering factual questions. This type of reading for literal comprehension is often emphasized because of the ease and equity of evaluation. The emphasis is limiting because many students do not develop a personal attachment to books they read. They do not see reading as a bridge to their imaginations, a way to understand how others live their lives, or a method to gain self-understanding and evaluation. Questions that teachers ask can direct the students to the realization that reading has a greater and more diverse purpose than just the simple recall of facts. If this can be accomplished, it is likely that students will place a higher value on reading, continue to turn to it for pleasure and as a resource, and will establish it as a life-long habit. PROCEDURE For any assigned reading selection, develop questions that reflect the progression of thinking and responding from the literal level to the evaluative. Not all levels need to be developed for every selection. Consider a range that will lead the student to the greater purpose of reading.

Extractions: English-Zone.Com ...the BEST English-Learner's site on the 'Net! Check out these books about dolphins. Dolphins are mammals, not fish. They are warm blooded like man, and give birth to one baby, called a calf, at a time. At birth, a bottlenose dolphin calf is about 90-130 cms long and will grow to approximately 4 metres, living up to 40 years. They are highly sociable animals, living in groups, called pods, which are fairly fluid, with dolphins from other pods interacting with each other from time to time. Dolphins carry their young inside their womb for about 12 months. The baby is born tail first, and its mother will feed the calf for up to 2 years. However, the calf will stay with its mother for between 3-6 years, during which time it will learn all about feeding techniques, social interaction and group hunting. Extractions: Successful reading comprehension is correlated with oral reading fluency and vocabulary knowledge. However, interventions that focus on improving fluency or vocabulary do not necessarily increase reading comprehension, especially of long passages. Students with LD often show signs of giving up too quickly when faced with a difficult passage. This so-called task persistence, a skill that must be acquired by all readers, is especially important for successful reading of expository text, such as history and science textbooks, newspapers, and voter pamphlets.
