     Extractions: Reading text with comprehension is the ultimate goal of reading instruction and is a skill that is critical to success across domains of life activity. Across our life span and daily living environments, we choose, or are required, to read texts for understanding, enjoyment, or task completion. Children with disabilities tend to find this an imposing task. Children with autism, for example, are often noted for their relatively well-developed word reading skills but poor text comprehension. Children with cerebral palsy, on the other hand, often demonstrate relatively well-developed listening comprehension for text but poor reading comprehension. Our research (e.g., Erickson, Koppenhaver, Yoder, & Nance, 1997) and experiences at the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies suggest to us that students with disabilities have the same needs and learn in much the same way as other children. That is, if we reduced our research to a single conclusion, it would be, "Good instruction is good instruction." The greatest difference we find to date is that children with disabilities, particularly severe or multiple disabilities, require more conscious and careful consideration than children without disabilities in thinking through how to make good instruction accessible given the nature of their individual differences in communication, cognition, attention, behavior, sensory or physical abilities.

Poor readers often do not... • draw on background knowledge as they read; • make predictions as they read; • visualize the events of a text as they read; • recognize confusion as they read; • recognize a text's structure /organization as they read; • identify/recognize a purpose for reading; • monitor their strategy use according to the purpose for reading the text; • Etc. In other words, students do not necessarily think while they are reading. Modeling By modeling for students the types of behaviors good readers are engaged in as they read, we are providing them with the opportunity to become aware of the many strategies and monitoring behaviors that good readers use. When good readers are reading relatively simple texts (according to their own reading abilities) these strategic behaviors are fairly automatic. Typically, good readers only become aware of their strategy use when they recognize that they are failing to comprehend. They then are cognizant of the need to reevaluate their strategy use in order to remedy their failure to comprehend. Furthermore, good readers are more likely to fall back on appropriate strategies when the need to change strategies becomes apparent. For most poor readers however, using a variety of strategies, using strategies appropriately, and monitoring strategies is not automatic. Therefore modeling strategic behaviors for struggling readers by thinking aloud for them while we read (and hence, allowing students to think along), is the first step in raising their awareness of what it means to be a strategic reader.

Imagine yourself having just finished reading a chapter from one of your most difficult classes. Stop and think for a moment. Can you recall what you just read? More than not, we read the words, understand what they say, but fail to internalize their message to us. Internalizing what we have read is more commonly known as comprehension. Reading comprehension involves developing purposeful reading skills, developing reading skills or literal comprehension, developing evaluative skills or critical comprehension, and practicing comprehension skills. College students need to be introduced to important cognitive reading skills for effective reading comprehension. Reading is an active rather than a passive process. Once you have established your purpose, chosen a strategy, and focused your attention, you are then ready to monitor your comprehension. Surprised? You shouldn't be. First, do all the elements and ideas make sense? Can you see where the author is leading? Next, can you connect ideas while reading at a regular comfortable pace? And finally, if you can understand why the material was assigned and can express it in your own words, then you should feel comfortable and have some knowledge about the topic. Keeping these things in mind while you read will eventually, if not immediately, tell you whether or not you are effectively comprehending the assignment.

Moreover, however, comprehension should go beyond simply understanding the explicit message that is being conveyed by the author. To truly comprehend text is to make connections between the information in the text and the information in the reader's head, to draw inferences about the author's meaning, to evaluate the quality of the message, and possibly even to connect aspects of the text with other works of literature. Reading comprehension has always been the goal of reading instruction, but it is not a concept well understood or easily assessed. The Simple View of Reading that has been described under " S is for Simple View ," states that reading comprehension is the product of Language Comprehension skills and Decoding skills, and that view is accurate as far as it goes. All that means is that Language Comprehension also depends upon a person's ability to draw inferences, make evaluations, and make connections. And research has shown that as children develop these skills in reading comprehension, the skills generalize to language comprehension, and vice versa.

Hypertext presents a new way to read on-line text that differs from reading standard linear text. Text is typically presented in a linear form, in which there is a single way to progress through the text, starting at the beginning and reading to the end. However, in hypertext, information can be represented in a semantic network in which multiple related sections of the text are connected to each other. A user may then browse through the sections of the text, jumping from one text section to another. This permits a reader to choose a path through the text that will be most relevant to his or her interests. The features in hypertext supply flexibility to the reader when compared to reading linear text such as books. Clearly some of this flexibility does exist in books (e.g. table of contents and indexes), but it is not as widely used or exploited. Hypertext permits readers to use these features automatically rather than requiring readers to manually refer to them as needed. This provides additional control to the reader in determining the order that the text is to be read, and allows the reader to read the text as if it were specifically tailored to the reader's background and interests. This flexibility does promise an advantage of personalization and eases the burden of finding information, However, is this flexibility actually good or useful to the reader?
