Extractions: PLAY - Tucson, Arizona Reading comprehension is more than just being able to read the words that appear on a page. Once that ability is mastered, learners must also be able to form mental pictures in their mind on what they are reading. Comprehension requires the reader to go beyond the actual words on the page and see the idea and pictures the writer is trying to present. In the Mindplay Lifelong Learning Center, we developed a series of lessons that helped our students boost their reading comprehension ability. They teach the learner that words are symbols for real objects or ideas and that by changing or adding words, the idea or picture changes. The lessons are based on an analysis of how people talk, so we named the process "Read Like You Talk." We are sharing our lesson plans to empower any person to teach a learner how to better understand what the learner reads. The lessons are designed for two people working together - a learner and a parent, teacher, friend or tutor. People from age seven to adult can greatly improve their reading comprehension with these lessons. The lessons can be used on screen or can be printed from this site.

NED KELLY - CRIMINAL AND FOLK HERO He has been described as 'one of the most romantic figures in Australian history' and as 'the father of our national courage'. Yet he was a criminal. He shot and killed policemen. He kept ordinary Australians hostage. He was a thief. Why was he considered a hero and why is he still revered today, more than 100 years after his death? It is a national mystery. He is and was a controversial figure. His whole family was on the wrong side of the law. His parents were sent to Australia on a convict ship for committing petty crimes. Ned's criminal career began at a young age in country Victoria. In 1874 he was jailed for stealing a horse. Ellen Kelly , his mother, was jailed in 1878 for wounding a policeman. Also in 1878 Ned and his younger brother Dan were falsely accused of attacking a wounded policeman. Both men fled to the bush where the 'Kelly Gang' was formed. For sixteen months they eluded police, committing robberies to survive. They killed three policemen, robbed a bank in Euroa and held the town of Jerilderie hostage. In 1880 they took over the Glenrowan hotel and took many of the town's residents hostage. They made armour of thick steel to protect themselves from police bullets. Unfortunately the heavy armour made them clumsy. Ned was eventually captured and his brother Dan died in a fire when the Glenrowan hotel was burnt down.

With my books splayed everywhere and my feet tapping at a hundred miles a minute, I mouthed every word of the book I was reading out loud. When I finished my reading, I would literally talk to myself about the ideas, themes, or characters of that particular assignment. Why did I do this? I didn't realize it as a kid, but I was trying to integrate something called verbal processing into the act of reading. Verbal processing simply means talking about information in order to retain and understand it. Verbally engaging your child before and after reading will greatly increase her comprehension, enabling her to become a more competent reader. In order to help you get the conversation (and the thoughts) flowing, here are some questions you can ask your child, regardless of whether or not you are familiar with the reading yourself. However, the ultimate goal is to empower your child to have these conversations directly with her teacher or peers. Moreover, when it comes to pre-reading questions, it's reasonable for you or your child to ask the teacher for some questions or an outline of the reading to serve as a conceptual framework. Kameenui University of Oregon Introduction The purpose of this research synthesis is to examine recent research on the relation between metacognition (i.e., reviews published since 1985 and primary research published since 1986) and reading comprehension, as it pertains to diverse learners. Through this review, we sought to identify areas of convergence useful for understanding characteristics of and instructional implications for diverse learners. In general, we found that reading metacognition is related to reading comprehension and that this relation may be affected by student motivation. Additionally, we identified dimensions of metacognition instruction that enhanced reading comprehension and, in some instances, increased motivation. Before describing convergent areas, we provide historical and contemporary contexts surrounding metacognition, discuss unresolved issues, and describe our synthesis methodology. Historical and Contemporary Contexts The notion of learners thinking about their own thinking dates back to at least Plato and Aristotle (Brown, 1987). Yet, metacognition, a term for the concept of thinking about or controlling one's own thinking and learning processes, was not introduced until 1976 by Flavell. Accordingly, the role of executive processes and their relation to reading did not receive substantial attention until the late 1970s. Since that time, theoretical and empirical interest in metacognition increased in the 1980s, and tended to diminish in the early 1990s B. Wong (personal communication, September 25, 1995). A brief review of the evolution of metacognition in psychology and education is presented to provide a context for research and instructional implications addressed in this chapter.

How do we teach children to comprehend more difficult and varied texts? Until recently, we had few answers. But research from recent decades has provided a general outline of how to effectively teach reading comprehension. 1. Effective comprehension instruction requires purposeful and explicit teaching. Effective teachers of reading are clear about their purposes. They know what they are trying to help a child achieve and how to accomplish their goal. They provide scaffolded instruction in research-tested strategies (predicting, thinking aloud, attending to text structure, constructing visual representations, generating questions and summarizing). Scaffolded instruction includes explicit explanation and modeling of a strategy, discussion of why and when it is useful, and coaching in how to apply it to novel texts. 2. Effective reading instruction requires classroom interactions that support the understanding of specific texts.
