Extractions: Integration of Geometer's Sketchpad in the Intermediate Division for Ontario Schools Chapter 3: RATIO and PROPORTION The chapter, Ratio and Proportion was setup very differently than all the other lessons. The two lessons in this unit, Investigation of Ratios and Investigation of Proportions include pre-made sketches. Through the use of the sketch, students investigate what a ratio/proportion is, the key differences between them, the similarities, and how to calculate a ratio and a proportion. Both lessons are best taught through student-directed learning. Teachers should focus on student understanding of the transition from a visual to the concrete and vice versa for each lesson. LESSON ONE - Investigation of Ratios ONTARIO CURRICULUM Covered: In this lesson students manipulate a ratio line to formulate a ratio. By using a line that goes up to ten, students have a clear understanding of 2 out of 10. Many students understand the ratio line as a ruler where 10 represent 1 cm and each point in between represents a millimeter. By the end of this investigation students have a clear understanding of a ratios, how to write a ratio, and can visualize a ratio. This lesson gives students the necessary explanation and visuals that students require too understand ratios at the grade seven and eight level.

Extractions: The relative sizes of bodies in our solar system affect life on Earth. Using mathematical proportions, we can create scale models of parts of our solar system. Making a scale model of the entire solar system is problematic because the distances in space are so great that even a very small scale model would be too large to be practical. Divide your class into groups, distributing materials to each group. Either have students obtain the following information through research or provide the information for them: the diameter of the moon is 3,476 kilometers, the diameter of Earth is 12,734 kilometers, and the average distance of Earth from the moon (it changes slightly over time) is 384,000 kilometers.

I told them that they were to include their hands near their faces in the photos. The most hilarious thing is that I never told them what we were going to do with the photos. If I did tell them in advance that they were going to draw themselves, they would have been more inhibited. They really played the fool for these pictures and had a great time doing it.

At the time of study, she was taking her first mathematics education methods course with 40 hours of school internship and had completed 6 rigorous mathematics courses beginning with the engineering calculus sequence. Her 3.8 GPA indicated successful college experiences as a student.
Golden Ratio Lesson Plan The basic lesson was completed in one 80 minute class period. Another name for the Golden Ratio is teh Divine Proportion. The description of this http://www.saintjoe.edu/~tsp/lessonplan
Extractions: Lesson Overview The purpose this lesson is to provide students with a hands-on activity to accompany a unit involving ratios. In this activity, students calculate the ratio of the height of the body to the height of the navel. Students will discover that the ratios are all approximately equal. Indeed, the ratio of the height of the body to the height of the navel is consistent with the Golden Ratio. The lesson, then, introduces the concept of the Golden Ratio and provides students with knowledge to explore the presence of Golden Ratios in their everyday lives. The lesson incorporates several of the standards found in Principles and Standards for School Mathematics as encouraged by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. For example, the lesson enables students to connect mathematics to realms outside of mathematics. Specifically, the Goldren Ratio is present in nature, including the human body, and architecture. In addition, the lesson incorporates measurement by having the students use a meter stick to obtain data involving measurable attributes of concrete materials.

Extractions: Unit Plan Stock Market Project Overview: This unit will seek to unify four main mathematical concepts through a stock market project completed individually by each student. The five concepts to be covered are: ratio and proportion, percent increase and decrease, the counting principle, probability, and graphing. In addition, applications of these topics as they pertain to the stock market project will also be studied. The stock market will serve as a means of unifying the content and generating increased levels of student interest. The project will involve each student picking a stock of his or her choice to track over the two weeks spanned by this unit. In those two weeks, students will check their stocks each day and later apply the lessons used in class to analyze, compare, and graph their data. Examples of this application include, but are not limited to: Ratio and Proportion for every dollar Tommy made, Sue made x dollars Probability what is the theoretical probability of a stock going up three days in a row? down two days in a row? Up one day, down the next? Percent Increase/Decrease what percentage did each students profits increase or decrease over the two week period?

Extractions: Unit Plan for Ratio, Proportion, and Percent Curriculum Unit Plan Mathematics Seventh Grade Unit 3: Ratio, Proportion, and Percent Abstract In this unit students learn to reason proportionally. Proportional reasoning provides an underpinning for the study of algebra in future years. Students learn to think in relative amounts as expressed by ratios and rates (e.g., 15 miles/gallon, 4/3). When students perceive relationships involving growth, unit costs, etc., they are thinking proportionally. They learn how to apply ratio and proportion to many daily activities such as sales tax, the relationship between hours worked and earned income, actual distances between cities compared to map distances, and unit pricing at grocery stores. Percents are studied as ratios in which the divisor is 100, and students apply percent in many practical situations.
