Illuminations Lesson Plan Internet Mathematics Excursion SingleDay lesson plans / 6 - 8, These lessons are designed for students to understand ratio, proportion, scale factor http://illuminations.nctm.org/lessonplans/6-8/linking/
Extractions: Linking Length, Perimeter, Area, and Volume This cluster of Internet Mathematics Excursions is based on E-example 6.3 as described in the Geometry Standard and Measurement Standards . These lessons are designed for students to understand ratio, proportion, scale factor, and similarity using perimeter, area, volume and surface area of various rectangular shapes. E-example 6.3.1 E-examples 6.3.2 is the basis for the fourth and fifth lessons. The fourth lesson focuses on the relationship between scale factor and volume. The final lesson highlights the surface area for rectangular prisms in relationship to scale factor. Part 1: Body Building (Coming Soon) In this lesson, students define and apply ratio, proportion, and similarity. Using an on-line activity, Body Ratios, students measure and create ratios to represent their body measurements. Using the ratios students build an understanding of proportionality. A connection to similarity leads students to examine similar rectangles. Part 2: Blue Squares and Beyond Using Figure and Ratio of Area , an on-line interactive applet, students manipulate width and height to consider the relationships between the ratio of rectangle areas and the ratio of width and height. This lesson focuses on the concept of similarity and scale factor of rectangles.

The accompanying classroom activities booklet aims to help teachers bring yearbook insights into the classroom with a sample of activities related to proportional reasoning. Each activity features discussions of the mathematics topic and the mathematics of the activity along with reproducible classroom materials and implementation suggestions. For example, the relationship between fractions and area is examined in an activity for grades 5-8. Students are given a worksheet with a diagram of a 12-foot square divided into three regions, a six-foot square, an isosceles triangle with two six-foot sides, and an irregular shape for the remaining area. Students are guided through a discussion of what fraction of the total area is covered by each region. The teaching notes explain the process for subdividing larger regions into smaller congruent regions and include questions to ask students as well as typical student responses. (Author/JRS)

Extractions: The subjects were six graduate students in science education who were current high school teachers of chemistry or who had previously taught chemistry. For this paper, transcripts of two teachers were selected for analysis. Teacher #1, Carolyn, was a current high school teacher with two years of teaching experience. She was near the end of her masters degree program. Teacher #2, Mary, had previously taught chemistry for two years, and had begun a masters degree program as a full-time student. Both teachers had at least four semesters of chemistry as undergraduates. Protocol The research involved a lesson-planning assignment with pre- and post-interviews. The two interviews were videotaped and transcriptions of the interviews were prepared. The appendix includes the pre- and post-interview protocols, a list of materials provided for the teachers, and the lesson-planning assignment. The time required for the entire process was approximately 75 minutes: preliminary interview (15 minutes), lesson planning assignment (30 minutes), and post-interview (30 minutes). The lesson planning activity occurred in a private room where the teacher would not be disturbed.
The Standards Site: Sample Year 6 Booster Lessons the use of calculators, fractions, decimals and percentages, and ratio and proportion. They are no more than the sample lesson plans they claim to be. http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/numeracy/publications/intervention/12826/
Extractions: Your path: Standards Site Home Numeracy Publications download/order This book contains 12 sample lesson plans for you to use with Year 6 booster groups. They are designed to reflect the mathematical content and approaches to teaching that have proved particularly helpful to children who need intensive targeted support to reach level 4 in the Key Stage 2 national tests. Experience has shown that many children currently operating just under level 4 in Year 6 can make the progress required to catch up, and that booster classes can help you to provide the necessary help and support. It is crucial for these children to reach the expected standard before entering secondary school if they are to fulfil their potential in the subject and succeed in GCSE mathematics. Lesson plans All lessons follow the three-part model developed by the National Numeracy Strategy. The plans list teaching objectives, vocabulary, resources, teaching points and key questions. Each lesson ends with a key statement for children to remember. There is a substantial proportion of direct teaching in which children are expected to participate. All the general principles of effective mathematics teaching apply to these lessons. Some elements are specially important for booster classes: a step-by-step approach; built-in consolidation and frequent summaries; the expression of the same mathematical ideas in a variety of ways; the reinforcement of key mathematical vocabulary; and encouraging children to spell out and articulate their mathematics. Less emphasis than usual is given to differentiation as the lessons are targeted at a specific group in Year 6. This doesn't mean that the pitch of the lessons is automatically right for your group of children. You will need to adjust them according to your children's current attainment levels, their progress and the responses they make.
NTTI: Lesson Plans Web sites, students will prepare a lesson plan to teach Health Students can visit The Golden Proportion Web site learn about how the Golden Ratio appears in http://www.rmpbs.org/ntti/lessons/math/aga_lk01.html
Extractions: This is the second lesson of a two part series. The first one, "Finding Fibonacci" ( http://www.rmpbs.org/ntti/lessons/math/ffi_lk01.html ), introduces students to the Fibonacci numbers and their applications in nature. This lesson uses the Fibonacci numbers to explore the Golden Ratio and Golden Rectangles and their applications. In addition to students learning about Golden Rectangles and similarity, students find examples of the Golden Ratio on the human body through measurement. Additionally, students learn about the use of the Golden Ratio and the Golden Rectangle in art and architecture. They do constructions with compass and straightedge to further their understanding of the Golden Ratio, Golden Section, and Golden Rectangle. Ultimately, they look for examples of the Golden Ratio and Golden Rectangle in their community and throughout history.
