Lesson Plans: How Big Is That Star? If students have participated in and completed the lesson titled Time some prealgebraic concepts such pattern recognition, ratios, proportions, decimals, and http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/teachers/lessons/star_size/star_size.html
Extractions: Imagine Home Lesson Plans Current page How Big Is That Star? Students will be able to explain the relationship between radius and mass among a list of stars. Students will understand how a binary star system's orbit can cause changes in the observed brightness of the system. Students will determine the diameters of stars by analyzing data and manipulating equations. 6th through 9th grades If students have participated in and completed the lesson titled "Time that Period!" , they have a good foundation in astrophysical data analysis and binary star systems. But if "Time that Period!" cannot be completed, please refer to the following: For each class of students, you will probably need at least 2 periods/mods. Here are some examples of what you may want students to do. Substituting your own is, of course, always acceptable!

COMETS LESSON PLAN: WORKING WITH RATIOS COMETS lesson PLAN Working With ratios. Activity Area Mathematics. Students will then create equivalent proportions based on their ratios. Materials http://www.rit.edu/~comets/pages/lessonplans/workratios.html
Extractions: Hands on Activity: Introduce the formal definition of Ratio to the students. A Ratio is a comparison of two measurements. Students are to take turns tossing 10 pennies towards the center of the cardboard box provided by the teacher. Using the worksheet provided, students should be recording the misses and successes of each other. When everyone is finished, students are then to calculate the ratio of hits to total shots. On a second worksheet, students are to choose two of the students in class and predict using their information, how many hits would be made if there were 20 shots taken, 50 shots, or 100 shots. Discuss with students their predictions and reasons. Explain the definition of a proportion. Demonstrate how to use a proportion to solve a problem like the above predictions that does not include guessing.
IdahoPTV NTTI Lesson Plan: A Recipe For Success One worksheet per 3 students. Review the lesson plan. The activity is a group discussion to review the concepts of ratios and proportions. http://www.idahoptv.org/ntti/nttilessons/lessons2003/henderson.html
Extractions: This is an interactive, media enhanced lesson that requires students to examine ratios and proportions. The primary goal is to develop connections between math and real-world situations. Through the use of video, students will explore a relevant application of ratios and proportions. Using the internet, students will apply this concept through guided practice and interactive feedback. Students will then make connections to other real-world examples by applying this knowledge to similar problems in other areas. This lesson incorporates mathematical skills, reading, and writing in an interdisciplinary format. Learning Objectives:
Extractions: Begin by introducing the concept of scale. Write the word scale on the board and brainstorm examples of where scales are found and what they measure. For example, we use scales to measure the weight of an object, the temperature of air, the length of an object, and so on. Show students a map of the United States and point out the scale in the map key. Remind them that this map is a smaller, scaled-down representation of the United States, not an actual representation. Explain that sometimes we shrink objects or make them larger so they are easier to work with. The map is a scale model of an object that is too large to represent on paper. Other scale models represent objects that are too small, such as a diagram of an atom or a magnified view of a computer chip. Review the scale on the map. For example, the scale may say that 1 inch is equal to 50 miles. Explain that a scale is a ratio used to determine the size of a model of a real object. In this case, the map of the United States is the model.
