Extractions: The cirl bunting needs plenty of insects to survive One of the UK's rarest birds has come back from the brink of extinction, according to a new survey. The population of cirl buntings has increased six-fold over the past 14 years, from 118 pairs to nearly 700. Conservationists say the bird was saved thanks to a scheme in which farmers are paid to maintain their land in a "cirl bunting friendly way". The scheme was organised by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, with funding from government bodies. Seeds and insects The cirl bunting, a relative of the more familiar yellowhammer, is confined to south Devon - but in the past it ranged widely across southern Britain. Cirl buntings rely on very particular conditions to survive. In the summer they require a large supply of insects, especially grasshoppers, to feed their chicks; while in the winter they need a rich source of seeds. Traditionally insects were plentiful in hay fields, and seeds could easily be found after the harvest.

There will be a birding outing for members on the fourth day led by a local expert. The Rare Bird Club is invited to Holkham Hall in Norfolk for an evening reception to be hosted by Lord and Lady Leicester. Members can stay overnight at a comfortable private hotel on the Holkham Estate, and go bird watching on Saturday at some of the most outstanding reserves in this part of England, at one of the best times of the year for breeding birds. There is the option of staying a further night and doing some more birding on Sunday morning near the charming seaside village of Cley. Local specialists and wardens will lead all birding trips. Extractions: An American novel The Faces of God and the Devil? I took the two unretouched pictures shown here the afternoon of the terrible Xenia tornado. Since severe storm systems that spawn tornadoes usually travel from SW to NE, these clouds were undoubtedly involved in that tragic storm. I just pointed the camera at the ugly swirling clouds and took two shots. It was only in recent years while refiling a bunch of photographs that I discovered these startling likenesses of God and the Devil/ Satan is at the left and you can easily see the classic goat-like features and evil eyes. God is at the right, and you can see his stolid perplexed face and worried eyes framed by a beard. I couldn't help but think that maybe these two guys were up there duking it out. Mythical beings or religious icons, whatever. What do you think?

It was seen again on June 6. A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER and two RED-EYED VIREOS have been at Headquarters all week. The EASTERN PHOEBE continues to be see along the Little Deschutes River south of Sunriver. On June 4 a CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD was at Jewell Meadows in the Coast Range. On June 9 three BLACK TERNS were at the Vanport Wetlands in North Portland. A LARK SPARROW was seen June 6 at Ramsey Lake near Kelly Point Park in North Portland. An EASTERN KINGBIRD and several RED-EYED VIREOS were at the Sand River Delta June 7. On June 5 a WHITE-FACED IBIS was at the Baskett Slough NWR. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was south of Brownsville June 6.
