Links to Bird Records Committees Introduction The Trinidad and Tobago Rare Bird Committe (TTRBC) was established as an independent organisation governed by a set of bye-laws in September 1995. The primary functions of the TTRBC are to: 1. Maintain an official list of the bird species of Trinidad and Tobago. 2. Maintain a review list of bird species whose occurrence in Trinidad and Tobago requires further documentation. 3. Solicit details for all reports of species on its review list. 4. Evaluate the adequacy of documentation for all such reports. 5. Publish periodic reports of its findings. The TTRBC evaluates reports of birds with the aim of converting them into documented records that can be used reliably for scientific studies of bird distribution and patterns of avian vagrancy. The TTRBC currently comprises seven members including a Secretary responsible for assigning a number to and cataloging each report received, circulating the reports among TTRBC members, and compiling the decisions. Each TTRBC member evaluates whether the information provided in each report is sufficient to support the identification. A record is accepted when a minimum of six members vote for it. For species whose origin is questionable (e.g., escaped cagebird), each member judges whether the bird more likely arrived under its own power or with the aid of humans; a minimum of six votes is required to accept the record as a natural occurrence.

    Extractions: on the tiny island of St. Lucia BEFORE DAWN on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, Michael Bobb emerges from the tin-roofed, pink-and-blue cabin that serves as his base in the dense rain forest. A broad-shouldered, barrel-chested officer in St. Lucia's Forest and Lands Department, Bobb rallies the troops from inside the field station and scattered tents outside: fellow foresters, local students, and foreign biologists and conservationists. Despite the steady downpour, it's time to look for parrots. Bobb slips on a day pack containing his binoculars, notebook, field guide and a poncho and trudges down a muddy trail through a thick mist that conceals a chorus of croaking frogs. Clad in T-shirt and jeans, he seems oblivious to the rain. After a mile and a half, near the top of a ridge, he stops at the base of a silver-colored gommier tree. His destination is still a hundred feet overhead. Taking care not to slip on metal spikes drilled into the smooth trunk, the forest officer begins to climb. Eighty-five feet up, branches and dangling lianas impede his progress. He wraps an arm around one branch from below and, suspended like Spiderman, hauls his bulky body on top of it to pull himself the final few feet up to an observation platform.

    Extractions: Ohio wildlife officials tagged four baby peregrine falcons in Northern Kentucky this week, hoping to preserve and track the species. On Tuesday, wildlife workers were at the Ironton-Russell Bridge near Russell, Ky., to tag four falcon babies, each less than four weeks old. Officials retrieved the falcons from their nests and attached a band to each leg. The first band lists a number that identifies the falcon, akin to a Social Security number for people, said the Division of Wildlife's Web site. The second band contains color patterns and a few letters or numbers, allowing watchers to know from which region the falcons came. The identification is part of a program administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to track and increase the population of the falcons, which are endangered in Ohio. The falcons disappeared east of the Mississippi River in the 1960s after the pesticide DDT was found to hinder their egg formation.

The Jerdon's courser was thought extinct since the 19th century until it was re-discovered in an area of scrub jungle in 1986 in the Andhra Pradesh region of India. A nocturnal ground-dwelling bird, it hunts for termites and other insects in open thorn scrub. Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) researcher Panchepakesan Jeganathan made the first ever recording of the courser's call with RSPB scientist Simon Wotton in 2001. The recording was transferred to the microchip technology used in the RSPB's soft bird toys, made by specialist cuddly toy manufacturers, Wild Republic. The device has been included in a pocket-sized box, which also carries a photograph of the bird and details of who to contact if they are heard or seen. A thousand of the boxes are being dispatched to India for forest rangers, local communities, conservationists and birdwatchers from India and all over the world.     Extractions: Five barn owls were among the birds discovered A search of a sporting estate in the Borders has led RSPB Scotland, Lothian and Borders Police, SSPCA and Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department (SEERAD) officers to discover nine dead birds of prey. In a combined search, the bodies of five barn owls, two buzzards, one tawny owl and one kestrel were discovered on estate premises. The bodies have been sent away for post mortem. In the raid, several other items were seized including suspected poisons and banned pesticides. RSPB Scotland's Dave Dick said, 'We are increasingly working together with police forces and other groups in wildlife and environment investigations. With our combined knowledge and improved legislation, more wildlife criminals are being caught and dealt with by Scottish courts. Cases like this highlight the very real and continuing threat to our birds of prey'. The search follows the discovery by members of the public of six dead buzzards in the area, four of which were confirmed as being illegally poisoned.

    Extractions: The New Brunswick Bird Records Committee was formed to ensure that adequate information is preserved about unusual occurrences of birds in New Brunswick, to provide a process for formal acceptance of bird species to the provincial list , and generally to advance knowledge of birds in New Brunswick. The committee consists of five voting members , who are experienced birders, and a representative of the New Brunswick Museum, the repository for the bird documentation. To assist in preserving the details of unusual bird occurrences, the committee supplies a documentation form (available in both English and French versions) but its use is not mandatory. All written accounts, photos and other evidence will be welcomed. The committee conducts formal votes on the acceptance of the first five records of a species in New Brunswick (and on the first photo or specimen records). For voting to be held, each such record must be supported by at least two independent written submissions or by tangible evidence, such as a photo or tape recording. Although the committee will be examining in detail only the first five provincial records of a species, it is also valuable to fill out a documentation form for other records that are also considered very unusual the seventh provincial record, the second breeding record, the first record for the upper St. John valley, the first record in 25 years, etc.

    Extractions: It is too early to tell if this weather is bad enough to kick the redpoll hordes our way. Here is a sampler in case it happens. Identifying these birds is very hard, sometimes impossible unless you are right on top of them. It is important to remember that: Immatures and females of both species are darker and more heavily streaked, such that an immature Hoary may be darker than an adult Common. There are two subspecies of Hoary that are VERY different from each other in SIZE and SHAPE. The more common, southerly race, exilipes is just a bit bigger than Common, with a short, sometimes pushed-in bill. The rare, more northerly, hornemanni, is huge by redpoll standards, with a long, very deep based bill, and a dark immature female may look totally unlike what you expect from a Hoary. Hybridization has never been convincingly documented from North America, but it seems likely to occur. The best treatments are from Europe. The best illustrations are in the new Collins Bird Guide, by Svensson et al. while a superbly clear and detailed write up is in the new Handbook of Bird Identification, by Beaman and Madge. The Identification Guide to North American Birds, by Pyle is also excellent. Dave
