I n 1883, two years before the driving of the last spike marked the completion of Canada's first transcontinental railroad, three railroad workers stumbled upon a series of hot springs on the lower shoulder of what is now called Sulphur Mountain. By 1885, after a heated ownership dispute, the springs and surrounding area were set aside as Canada's first national park. The Canadian Pacific Railway immediately recognized the tourism potential of the Canadian Rockies. In 1888, under the direction of William Cornelius Van Horne, the elegant 250 room Banff Springs Hotel was completed. The railway then constructed a series of grand hotels along its main line and began advertising Banff as an international tourism stopover on the steel highway that had suddenly become the fastest and most direct route from Europe to the far East. The Rockies quickly became popular with the Victorian gentry, who came to drink in the scenery and soak in the soothing sulphur springs. Soon visitors were not just stopping over - they where coming to stay. In Banff and Lake Louise we are proud to share our local knowledge and appreciation for the nature, history and culture of our World Heritage destination.

Canadians are fascinated by their past and this is reflected in the many historical sites throughout the country. In Central and Eastern Canada, the history entails the early struggles of the first European settlers, and of how the two major cultural groups of the time (British and French) interacted to build a great nation together. In today's highly charged political arena, with on-going talk of Qu©bec independence, this earlier relationship is too often forgotten. The history of Central and Eastern Canada is also very much tied in with the American Revolution, when thousands of people loyal to the British crown crossed the border and settled in these areas in order to remain under British rule. The struggle with the United States continued until after the war of 1812, when an attempted invasion of Canada by the Americans was repulsed. Canada adopted the Statute of Westminster in December 1931, giving it full legislative autonomy within the British Empire. The country emerged as an independent nation within the Commonwealth after the Second World War, and the last legislative link with the U.K. was ended with the patriation of the Canadian constitution in 1982. Queen Elizabeth II remains Canada's head of state, represented by the Governor General.

In Upper Canada as elsewhere, canoes on rivers, packhorses on trails, wagons on roadways and barges on canals where all used to transport various types of commodities. By the 19th century a new form of locomotion made possible by improvements to the steam engine became available. This was the steam locomotive and it promised a means of smooth, fast and efficient transportation of goods. The railroad's major advantage was its capability to transport large volumes of goods over long distances. Unlike canals which performed the same task, the railroad could easily and relatively inexpensively reach into all areas of the province. For its early promoters the railroad was the means by which the economy of Upper Canada would be pulled into the forefront. All that was needed was men of vision, courage and capital to bring the railroads where they were needed. The railroads thus early on became equated with progress and economical development. It was generally held that a town of any size or ambition had to be served by at least one of the competing railroads if it expected to proper. The choice appeared to be either attract a rail line or suffer a certain economic decline.

The CNR is seen as the most fundamental expression of our attempt to build a nation, knitting together far-flung territories and different peoples with a band of iron. In the province of Prince Edward Island, our history is linked just as closely with the railway, but this connection is less of a success story. The CNR was a grandiose dream, which ended by uniting a country despite the odds. The P.E.I. Railway was a project as fully ambitious for a small colony, but the odds were not as much in our favor. The ill-conceived railway construction ended up bankrupting the then-independent colony and compelled it to accept the Confederation agreement it had refused only six years earlier. Today, there are few parts of the country as proudly Canadian as Prince Edward Island. But back in 1873, the Island's entry into Confederation was interpreted as a forced marriage, and the overwhelming factor forcing the hand of politicians was the railway debt. The railroad certainly worked towards nation-building in our province: it left us with little choice but to join Canada.
