Extractions: Fairbanks-Morse H12-44 This Fairbanks-Morse Model H12-44 locomotive was part of a group of locomotives built in 1953 for the United States Army at a cost of $224,700 each. It is a 1200 horsepower 120 ton yad switcher. In 1944, Fairbanks-Morse entered the United States railroad locomotive market trading on their excellent reputation in diesel power plants for marine applications. Their locomotives used an unorthodox opposed-piston design engine. During the next nineteen years, F-M achieved limited acceptance and rated a distant fourth place in market share during a period when all major American railroads were replacing their steam locomotives with diesels. F-M left the locomotive market in 1963. This locomotive was used most recently at the Seneca Army depot in Romulus, New York where it handled 30 to 100 cars per week on 42 miles of track at the base. In 1993, it was declared surplus by the Army, and a group of Rochester Chapter NRHS members purchased the unit for the Chapter through the Federal Property Assistance program. It arrived at the Museum in May 1993. It is operating condition and is used year round at the Museum as the locomotive uses antifreeze and has a block heater for winter use.

Casey legendary engineer, the Casey Jones wpe1A.gif (15790 bytes) railroad Museum StatePark commemorates Jones life and the story of railroading in Mississippi. http://www.yazoo.org/Casey.htm
Extractions: Shortly after midnight on April 30, 1900, the "cannonball" left Memphis, Tennessee with Jonathan Luther "Casey" Jones at the throttle. Trying to make up time in the run from Memphis to Canton, Mississippi, Jones has just run through a stop signal when a freight train came into view crossing the track in front of the "Cannonball. Realizing that a crash was inevitable, Jones ordered his fireman to jump clear just before the "Cannonball" rammed into four cars of the freight train. Jones was killed in the crash. The early 1900s were a period of expansion for the railroad across the country and train wrecks were almost a daily event. The brief account of the crash that appeared in the Memphis Commercial Appeal mentioned the engineer's death, but it was not considered a major news story. The tale of the ill-fated "Cannonball" would have ended on that night in 1900 if not for a friend of Jones' and a popularity of Vaudeville. Wallace Saunders, and African American engine wiper in Water Valley and a friend of Jones was deeply moved by the engineer's death and composed "The Ballad Of Casey Jones" as a tribute to his friend. The song eventually found its way to Vaudeville and with the addition of some fictional verses, became a popular hit. By the end of World War I, dozens of versions of this song had been published and millions of copies of the sheet music were in circulation. Casey Jones had become a legend.

Extractions: Kellen Claton was focused on fire trucks Friday morning, but the 2-year-old is equally enthusiastic about trains, according to his mom, Denise Claton. It makes sense, then, that the busy mom likes the idea of the two museums being located next to each other. The biggest difference, she said, will come in the quality of the exhibits. Museum officials figure $400,000 will go into creating interactive and educational displays. Among its nine to 11 exhibits, the museum also will introduce waterway and construction displays. Portola Railroad Museum The Western Pacific railroad Museum and other cool train stuff. The Portolarailroad Museum The Feather River Rail Society. PORTOLA, Calif. http://www.railroadinfo.com/triprprt/feather_02.html
Extractions: San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group The Western Pacific's jewel in this triple crown was the Feather River Route, 115 miles of crashing waters, sheer gorges, incredible bridges and tunnels that mark the canyon. Getting to the Portola Railroad Museum is a sightseer's windfall, whether taking Highway 70 through the Feather River Canyon east out of Oroville; making the easy 50 miles north from Reno on Highway 395 and then west on Highway 70; or going north from Truckee (at I-80) on Highway 89 through forests and valleys of ranches and farms so picturesque you expect to see the Cartrights galloping toward you at every turn. The museum isn't for sandals and white slacks. It's an old train workshop donated by the Union Pacific Railroad to help the Feather River Rail Society preserve the heritage of the Western Pacific and railroading in general; in the early Eighties, UP bought up the financially ailing WP and took over its tracks across the Sierras. The museum began in 1983, and UP donated the first engine shortly thereafter and has been a benefactor ever since . . . most recently donating a million-pound, 6,000-horsepower diesel called a Centennial to the cause.
