Extractions: Shearn Moody Plaza was the headquarters of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe until the offices closed in 1964. The majority of the building is office space for various businesses and organizations, but the large, central waiting room is the original waiting room built in 1932. As you walk in the front door from the Strand, to your left you will observe what was the Harvey House restaurant, to your right was the ticket booth, and straight ahead was the news stand and the doors to the concourses. The waiting room is now called the People's Gallery and is populated by Ghosts of Travelers Past. The full-sized figures in the gallery were made with plaster molds of real persons, and depict individuals who might have passed through the waiting room in 1932. The figures were created in 1981 by Elliot and Ivan Schwarz. Off to the left, where the Harvey House was, are several pieces of railroad china on display. These were donated by Henry Renfert and collectively are known as the Renfert Collection.

Extractions: National Railway Historical Society Presents the In the 1820's. the bustling seaport of Charleston experienced an alarming economic recession as settlements expanded inland and westward With the decrease in commerce. Charleston merchants began aggressively investigating avenues to revitalize the floundering economy. At this time, Europeans were just beginning to experiment with the concept of a "Rail Road"; a new means of transportation that employed a "locomotive" propelled along rails by steam power. In 1827 Charleston merchants persuaded the state legislature to charter the "South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company" to investigate the feasibility of a rail road system connecting Charleston with inland markets, and a canal between the Ashley and Savannah Rivers to divert trade from the Savannah River to Charleston. Although a canal was never built, funds were raised for the rail road, and Horatio Allen was employed as the project's chief construction engineer. Allen was responsible for charting the rail route and selecting the best means of propulsion. The rails ran a total of 136 miles from Charleston to Hamburg passing through Summerville, Branchville and Aiken. Both sail power and horsepower were considered before a steam engine was chosen. In October 1830, the engine arrived by packet ship from the West Point Foundry in New York. It was assembled and tested. Dubbed "Best Friend of Charleston'' by eager merchants, the train made its premier trip on Christmas Day, 1830, becoming the first steam locomotive in the US to establish regularly scheduled passenger service. It ran along six miles of wood and metal rails terminating near the junction of State and Dorchester Roads. This first trip was described by the ''Charleston Courier" on December 29:
