According to John Edward Hasse in his book Ragtime: From the Top: "There are four main types of ragtime: (1) instrumental rags, (2) ragtime songs, (3) ragtime or syncopated waltzes, and (4) 'ragging' of classics and other preexisting pieces." Our online collection contains primarily instrumental rags and ragtime songs. We have included at least one example of each of the other types. For an example of a ragtime waltz, see Mandy's Ragtime Waltz . To view a classic that was "ragged," view Paderewski Rag : a travesty on Paderewski's celebrated menuet Many modern music critics consider only the piano rags to be true ragtime music but, in the contemporary days of ragtime music, much of the public preferred the ragtime song. In fact, many instrumental rags had words added to them and were republished as ragtime songs, and ragtime songs were also republished in instrumental versions.     Extractions: The local view of Ragtime music shows Warrensburg was more popular than what many think. Mr. John William Boone actually lived in Warrensburg. Most of us know him as "Blind Boone." He is best known for his talent in playing the piano. There is a statue of him on Holden Street in down town Warensburg. The man is referred to as "Blind" Boone because he can't see. Most people don't know that he was not born with no eyesight. He could see perfectly fine until he was diagnosed at a young age with a disease known as brain fever. The only way to cure it was to gouge out the eyes and sew the eyelids shut. This relived the swelling of he brain. Boone was born on May 17, 1864. By the age of three he was able to beat rhythms on on varies objects. He even formed his own band including a tin whistle, drum, and a tabarien. Boone was shipped away to the Missouri School for the blind where he discovered the ability of being able to play any muscle piece on the piano right after he heard it. By this time he wa about 8 and would go to downtown St. Louis to listen to the new music called ragtime. He also moved to Warrensburg when he was 8 and lived in a segregated black community. In 1880 he was honored at a festival by being able to play with another blind pianist

    Extractions: Popular Music in the 1890s by Vicki Ohl Popular music in the American 1890s covered a variety of scenes which reflected both continued traditions as well as innovations. The town band provided entertainment for many functions, and was an institution in nearly every community. It played waltzes and two-steps for local dances and for concerts. Concerts, often outdoors, also featured marches, popular songs and program music. The most legendary bandleader of the era was John Philip Sousa, director of the U.S. Marine Band from 1880-1892. After that he toured America with his own band. Between 1879 and 1915 he wrote 140 military marches, such as Stars and Stripes Forever (1896). The piano became the central entertainment center of the home in the 1890s, a symbol of culture and prestige. Generally, women and girls played the instrument for the enjoyment of other family members, friends, or suitors. Popular songs reflected every aspect of American culture, and were often based on religious and ethnic themes and current fads, as well as courtship. The wave of sentimentality which swept the latter part of the nineteenth century in literature manifested itself in music which was ideal for the parlor. Lyrics frequently told tearful tales ending in death or a lover's departure. Many of the songs were written in waltz time. One of the first hits in the popular music field was After the Ball, written in 1892 by Charles K. Harris.X Other popular songs of the decade included The Band Played On, On the Banks of the Wabash, and Bicycle Built for Two.

Like Classical music it is very sophisticated, usually composed and is very similiar to marches. It appears to have gradually evolved out of musical pieces known as "cake walks", with the first true rag being the "Louisiana Rag", published in Oct. 1897, by Theodore H. Northrup. Ben Harney, sometimes referred as the "originator of Rag", was first to publish compositions known as "rags" but they were little more than cake walks. Encyclopedia Americana describes Ragtime as a music generally played on the piano with "highly rhythmic with a steady beat..." with "synopated melodies, played by the right hand...that contrast with the steady strong-and-weak alternations... played by the left hand."     Extractions: Styles of Jazz: Ragtime The history of ragtime is mirrored in the life and progress of Scott Joplin. This is not merely because Joplin was one of the great ragtime composers. The King of Ragtime experienced many of the elements whose confluence developed into those Euphonic Sounds which were the musical delight of America and even Europe at the turn of the century. The birth of ragtime is commonly set by the date of the first published rag. In 1895, Ben Harney published his ragtime song You've Been a Good Old Wagon in Louisville. This was the man who, a year later, brought ragtime to popularity in New York City. The first instrumental ragtime was William Krell's Mississippi Rag in January, 1897. It was not until the end of 1897, however, that Negro instrumental ragtime made its way to the publishers' presses with Tom Turpin's Harlem Rag . Having already published marches and waltzes, Scott Joplin finally published Original Rags in 1899. Relying on published works of music is misleading. This view of the birth of ragtime suggests that white men were at the forefront of sculpting the art form and that the best ragtime was committed to the printed page. Blacks were playing ragtime long before Krell's Orchestra, and making enough money from tips to live well. Even when publishers began to accept their lively, syncopated pieces, many composers rarely sold their work, having little need of money beyond the tips that accompanied performances in bars or on stage. If publication represents the birth of ragtime, then there had been a long gestation including many late night sessions when pianists and bands would rag behind closed doorsin private homes or in bars after closingwhere the most elaborate and boisterous music was often reserved for the artists' personal enjoyment.

This update contains 481 new titles gleaned from various sources and collections. A few titles have been dropped out (duplications or they didn't qualify after all) and there are over 493 corrections (spellings, added dates or publishers, etc) and over 460 references to new MIDI renditions. We believe this is the most comprehensive "ragtime" listing available. Everything here is free; it is just data with no Nonsense (MIDI courtesy Rob Crausaz who has sequenced many less common tunes). There are no catches. It is our contribution to the ragtime community that has given, and continues to give, each of the contributors so much enjoyment. We hope this material will aid other interested parties to find tunes they would like to hear and that it will encourage players/sequencers to address some of the currently unpresented tunes. It is hopefully also a lead to sources of scores for performers. From this page you can download three files - the spreadsheet, the notes and the Watanabe folio list.
