Extractions: from Dr. Louis Grivetti, the project's compiler: This year, 1996, marks the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic movement. In this spirit of celebration we acknowledge and recognize the names and publications of more than 50,000 historical and contemporary scholars, linked by the thread of a united, common interest in athletics, sport, and recreation. Athletics, games, leisure pursuits, physical education, play activities, and sports lie at the junction between the humanities, social sciences, and biological-medical sciences. While athletic activities most likely had their origin in military training, it is difficult in modern times to separate each theme: athletics from games, games from leisure pursuits and physical education, physical education from play, play from recreation, or recreation from sports. During past and present centuries research on human athletics, games, play, recreation, and sports has been conducted by a broad range of scientists, whether dietitians, nutritionists, physiologists, or physicians. Research on these themes also has been conducted by a broad range of scholars representing the humanities and social sciences, whether anthropologists, artists, classicists, dancers, economists, geographers, historians, musicians, psychologists, social theorists, or sociologists.

Racquetball Central The United States racquetball Association, located in Colorado recognized by the United States olympic Committee as US national governing body for the sport. http://www.racquetballcentral.com/HTML/history.htm
Extractions: The racquetball racquet is a shorter, lighter version of the one used in tennis. The lively, hollow rubber ball is about the size of a tennis ball. The rules are basically similar to handball rules, and versions exist for two players (as in singles), four players (as in doubles), and three players (as in cutthroat). The first side to score 15 points wins a game. In a match, two games are played. If each player or team wins one game, an 11-point tiebreaker is played to decide the winner of the match. The United States Racquetball Association, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the U.S. national governing body for the sport. Racquetball has it's roots from two other sports:squash and handball.

Extractions: Industry Mounts Campaign as Participation Declines Cease NORTH PALM BEACH, FL - June 20, 1995 - Racquetball may be in the early stages of a comeback. The number of Americans who played the game turned up slightly in 1994, to 7.7 million, according to a national survey that has tracked a slow erosion in participation since first measuring it at 10.4 million in 1987. And there are other signs of turnaround, says Brad Patterson, executive director of the Racquet Sports Committee of the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, which sponsors the study. "We expect more new courts to be built this year than taken out, probably a first for the 1990s," Patterson said. "Racquetball's governing body has been aggressively promoting the sport at the club level for several years. And now equipment manufacturers are helping step up the campaign. Invented in New Britain, CT, in the late 1950s, racquetball looked like a hot growth sport in the late '70s and early '80s, but cooled down about a decade ago. Club owners began converting courts for aerobic classes, exercise machines and other uses.

Extractions: Invented as an Enjoyable Way to Get a Good Workout, Racquetball Now Has 6 Million American Players, Including the Best in the World NORTH PALM BEACH, FL., June 22, 1998Invented almost 50 years ago in Bridgeport, Conn., to combine the speed of handball with the skills of paddleball, racquetball has become a global sport, popular enough to warrant a World Championship that will attract competitors from at least 35 nations to Cochabamba, Bolivia, July 10-18. Such a lofty accomplishment was beyond the wildest dreams of the sport's inventor, Joseph Sobek, who simply was looking for a way to get a good workout and have some fun. Sobek died March 27 at the age of 79, but his legacy is a sport vastly more popular than either of the two that served as his inspiration. Some 6.2 million Americans played racquetball at least once during 1997, according to a study that has tracked participation since 1987, and 1.6 million played it frequentlythat is, 25 or more times. The figures represent declines from those found in the first year of the study, 10.4 million and 2.0 million respectively. But those close to racquetball believe the years of attrition are ending. "The bleeding has stopped," said Luke St. Onge, executive director of U.S. Racquetball Association. "Health clubs are no longer tearing out their racquetball courts in large numbers. At least 1,800 new courts were built last year and hundreds of clubs have strengthened their racquetball programming. The popularity of the sport is stabilizing."

Extractions: Joe Sobek by Steve Wendell Almost a half-century ago, Joe Sobek, frustrated that he could not find an indoor racquet sport he liked, designed a new racquet, found a ball of the right size and spring, and invented racquetball. The sport now has 8 million players in the United States, 9 million worldwide, played in 91 nations, with a World professional tour . It is part of the quadrennial Pan American Games , and the international federation is trying to have it added to the 2004 Olympics in Athens. It was an office job at a rubber manufacturing plant that led to the start of racquetball in 1950. Sobek was such a good squash racquets player that he had trouble finding opponents. He rejected

We would like to thank our host, President Henry Kila for hosting us and to many of us who were in Port Moresby during the 1991 South Pacific Games, we were very impressed with the many changes in Port Moresby. While taking the tour in and around Port Moresby I was not able to identify many of the areas that I had frequented during the 1991 games. Unfortunately, our time was short to have a greater tour of the area and we accompanied each other on our way to our meeting in
