Extractions: bombing or booming in 1988? Olympic recognition could have a positive impact on the sport's credibility and growth. By Judy Julison Recreation professionals, like private business owners, face the potentially satisfying or potentially disappointing effects of their attempt to predict trends before they happen or respond to needs as they exist. In the 1970s, the game of racquetball was expanding by leaps and bounds, and there was every reason to believe that the sport would continue to grow at a rapid rate. Following the formation of the United States Racquetball Association and the first professional tour in 1973, a new and explosive interest had been generated among the non-professional player. Positive response Park and recreation agencies, along with private business executives, quickly responded to the sudden racquetball boom by constructing facilities, and developing league and lesson programs to accommodate the demands of the newborn racquetball community. By the late 1970s, new courts were popping up not only in Illinois, but also throughout the country, and hungry parades of racquet-ball hackers competed for court time at the local club. Unfortunately, the contagious enthusiasm which characterized the late 1970s did not continue.

Extractions: About the IRF RB History History Executive Committee Officers of the past First..... The History of Racquetball Racquetball was invented by Joe Sobek in 1949 on a Connecticut handball court. Seeking a game with fast pace that was easy to learn, Sobek designed the first short strung paddle, devised rules combining the basics of handball and squash, and named his modification "paddle rackets." His experiment was an overnight success, the sport caught on quickly and has since evolved into racquetball as we know it today. By the early 70's, court clubs could be found in every state and the sport enjoyed a rapid and steady rise in popularity. As Americans sought new and challenging athletic activities, the timing was perfect for racquetball courts were accessible nationwide and the sport was fun and easy to learn. The late 70's and early 80's saw racquetball become one of the fastest growing sports in America as thousands of new racquetball courts were built to satisfy the demand. But the sport saturated the market and reached its peak in the mid-80's, when many clubs either closed their doors or began converting courts to other uses. But by 1987 the decline leveled off and racquetball regained a steady, manageable growth rate.

Mr. Mazur is a past president of the association as well as a tournament player. It seems to be in the genes as well as their environment as both Mazur children, Eddie and Kara, are two of the elite Team Connecticut juniors. As regional champions, they competed in Phoenix, Ariz., at the U.S. Junior Olympic Championships at the beginning of the summer. Eddie won regionals in Vermont and New York, and Kara won both regionals and a junior national championship. "Kara Mazur is the first national champion at any level of racquetball from this state," said Juliet Campbell, who has been president of CRA since 1993. "I've been friends with Ed for 13 years through racquetball," said Campbell, who is also a business associate of Mr. Mazur and "one of three coaches of the Mazur kids. Scott Eliasson, who is a professional player, is brilliant with them. I concentrate on their conditioning by drilling and some technical work and Ed does the basic strokes and such." "Since Eddie can already beat me at age 13," said his father, "I guess we're doing a great job. Actually, Kara and Eddie have tried everything sports-wise. He competed in cross-country at Avon Middle School last year and Kara's going to start that this year. They both are on soccer travel teams and are going over with their mother after this interview to try tennis. We have no life except for driving them to various events." Mr. Mazur said, with a laugh.

Extractions: Racquetball Racquetball is a game played by two, three, or four players on an enclosed court 20 feet x 40 feet x 20 feet high. All wall surfaces, including the ceiling, are in play. In turn, each player (or team) must hit a bouncy blue or green racquetball to the front wall with a strung racquet, using any number of court surfaces (except the floor) enroute. On rebound from the front wall, the other player (or team) must then retrieve the ball before the second bounce and return it back to the front wall. If the ball bounces on the floor twice (TWO BOUNCES) before being hit with the racquet, or hits the floor enroute to the front wall after being hit with the racquet (A SKIP), either results in a LOSS OF RALLY. Each rally begins with a serve. The winner of the last rally serves the next. Points are earned by the server only. Games can be played to 11, 15, or 21 points. Matches are usually two games to 15 with an 11 point tie-breaker (IRF rules), or best of five 11 point games (Pro rules). The server stands completely inside the service box. The ball is bounced then struck by the racquet directly toward the front wall.

'If we are striving for the 2012 Olympiad in Leipzig with great efforts made by our entire society, we can ill afford a failure in the organization of The World Games for the non-Olympic sports,' DSB President Manfred von Richthofen told the press on April 2. Von Richthofen referred to the recent problems encountered by the 2005 Duisburg organizers in securing additional funds, after the World Games budget had to be increased considerably earlier this year. In his declarations, he considered the conduct of The World Games 2005 to be a 'question of prestige' for all German sports at the international level.

The NSGA initially had its headquarters in St. Louis, MO but is now located in Baton Rouge, LA. This is a not-for-profit organization with a volunteer board of directors and a full-time staff of 12. The NSGA is a community-based member of the United States Olympic Committee and serves as one of the USOCs official arms to the senior population. The NSGA sanctions and coordinates senior games across the United States and has 50 member organizations which included 49 state senior game associations and Washington, D.C. The NSGA is in charge of conducting the National Senior Games/Senior Olympics. To compete in these games, you must be at least 50 years of age and qualify at a NSGA sanctioned state game. MISSION The NSGAs mission is assisting seniors in achieving greater value and quality in their lives by staying healthy, active and fit. The steady growth of the national senior games and the countrys continuing interest in health and aging makes the National Senior Games Association an important resource. COMPETITIVE EVENTS In 1987, over 23,500 senior athletes participated in the first national multi-sport competition exclusively for seniors, then known as the U.S. National Senior Olympics. In 1989, there were over 3,400 competitors in St. Louis, MO. In 1991, in Syracuse, NY, over 5,000 senior athletes competed in the National Senior Sports Classic. In 1993, more than 7,200 senior athletes competed in Baton Rouge, LA. It soon became evident that these national senior games were becoming the fastest growing competition in the U.S. In 1995, San Antonio, TX hosted over 8,000 senior athletes for the games, and Tucson, AZ had over 10,000 senior athletes competing in 18 events. In 1999, the National Senior Games were held in Disneys Wide World of Sports in Orlando, FL where 11,000 seniors competed.
