Extractions: Among the most familiar of the wild animals maintained in the Nature Center's living collection are the raccoons. Raccoons are intelligent, mid-sized, nocturnal omnivores. Raccoons will eat anything they can find, plant or animal, including carcasses of road-killed animals. They are notorious for raiding garbage cans and can be easily trained to accept handouts from humans. In nature, raccoons normally live near water and obtain a significant percentage of their food from water. Crayfish are a favorite natural food. When hunting in water, raccoons search for food primarily by touch. Their hand-like front paws are very sensitive and can easily distinguish objects by feel. Their habit of "washing" food is related to their behavior of feeling objects underwater while hunting. Raccoons are able to adapt to life in close proximity to human habitations. In fact, human food scraps and agricultural practices may actually enhance the habitat for raccoons. It is estimated that 10,000 raccoons live in Buncombe County. Young raccoons are occasionally kept as pets, and are exceedingly curious and playful. As they mature, however, they become difficult, even dangerous, to handle.

Extractions: The raccoon is a common backyard "bandit" that is easy to spot with its black facemask and bushy, ringed tail. These animals are nocturnal. (That means active at night.) They spend the nighttime hours searching for food in cities and countryside. The raccoon is very good with its front paws, using them like hands. Its scientific name, Procyon lotor, means "a washer." Raccoons often seem to wash their food in the water. Raccoon tracks are easy to spot because their paw print looks like a pair of small human hands. Each foot has five long toes with short, curved claws. The raccoon's body is round. It has short legs and flat feet that cause it to waddle. The bottoms of raccoon feet are hairless. Look for tracks near the water since they like to wade in woodland streams, prowling for food. Look for raccoons at night, as they start moving around at sunset and then "disappear" after sunrise. You can find them all across Wisconsin, but they are less common in the northern counties. During the day, they rest on high ground or in hollow trees, rock crevices, burrows, caves, or buildings. They are found commonly in every one of the lower 48 States, in much of southern Canada and throughout Mexico and Central America. Raccoons are very adaptable animals and thrive in all kinds of habitats from the desert southwest to tropical forests and northern hardwoods. Unlike many wildlife, raccoons also do especially well in urban areas. Raccoons are found statewide in Florida in ever-increasing numbers. Urbanization and agriculture often help their population because food often becomes more available in these conditions. Therefore, it is not at all uncommon to encounter raccoons near your home or neighborhood. There is no mistaking a raccoon for any other animal. Its stout, bear-like body, prominent black mask and heavily furred, ringed tail all are distinctive. Adult raccoons are about 2 to 3 feet long (including their 10-inch tail) and weigh anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds. Larger animals sometimes are recorded, but Florida raccoons tend to be smaller than those farther north. Their color generally is a grizzled salt-and-pepper gray and black with a light belly. Often the "white" hairs are noticeably yellowish. Both all-black and all-white animals sometimes occur. Raccoons are active mostly during the evening hours. On most days, they leave their den soon after dusk and are active until morning. It is not unusual, however, for them to linger in their den well past nightfall, and during particularly nasty weather they may not venture out at all.

Raccoon rabies is found throughout the atlantic and southeastern states. It is a viral infection that can affect the nervous system of any mammal, including humans. The disease is almost always fatal to both people and animals. Raccoon rabies spreads rapidly and infects large numbers of raccoons. The disease often spreads to other wildlife and pets, making human exposure a real concern. To address this problem, the USDA/APHIS/Wildlife Services and the Tennessee Department of Health are participating in a combined federal and state agency program, to keep this animal epidemic from spreading further westward by eliminating raccoon rabies in northeastern Tennessee counties. The oral rabies vaccine bait, shown here, consists of a square block made from a compressed mixture of fishmeal and fish oil known to attract raccoons. The vaccine (dyed pink) is inside a plastic packet that is inserted in the middle of the block. Baits are distributed from vehicles or airplanes. Most of the baits will be consumed about five days after being distributed. People should tell their children to leave the baits alone. Pet owners are asked to keep their dogs and cats inside or on leashes so raccoons can eat the baits. Many people are very misinformed about these furry little creatures. Not all raccoons have rabies. This is one very common myth. Actually, Captain John Smith did play a roll in the naming of this cute carnivore which is native to North and Central America. In 1612 , he wrote "There is a beast they call Aroughcun", which the Indians prized for its meat and fur. The name Aroughcun means "he scratches with his hands." The scientific name for the most common North American raccoon is Procyon lotor. Lotor is Latin for "washer" and the raccoon has been observed by many to "wash" its food. There are seven species of raccoons in the new world, five live on tropical islands, one in the Yucatan and our friend Aroughcun. Although they are classified carnivores (meat eaters) they really are omnivorous,eating fish, frogs, clams, crayfish, termites, ant larvae, mice, insects and fruit, berries, nuts and vegetables and dog and cat food if they are living in the "city." Usually, they live in forests, marshes, plains but they also thrive in urban areas. In the wild they live approximately 6 years and the females give birth to 1-7 young after a 2 month long pregnancy. The adults usually weigh about 20-25 pounds with the males larger than the females. They do not hibernate but will become dormant in the cold northern winters. The raccoons have a reputation for clever nighttime raids on garbage cans and because of their almost hand-like front paws with their long, thin mobile fingers they can learn to open cans, latches, turn on faucets and get into all kinds of fun and trouble. They use these hands to catch their food and often appear to wash their food before eating it and wash their hands, but scientists aren't sure what this behavior really means. Most raccoons lead solitary lives but they can group together for food or shelter and the young stay with their mothers through the summer and into fall. Raccoons can carry some diseases which can be transmitted to humans and pets so it is unwise to pet or touch wild raccoons or to encourage them to eat in your pets food bowl. Usually they are shy but curious.

They are as intelligent as dogs and cats, but have far greater manual dexterity. Here are some humane, environmentally responsible tips for dealing with "raccoon encounters of the unwanted kind." Sometimes an animal may enter your living space through a pet door or other opening and be unable to find the way out. Raccoons can cause considerable damage if made to panic, so keep calm and do not approach or corner the animal. Confine pets and children and close off other parts of the house. Open windows and doors, leave the area, and wait quietly for the animal to leave. If the animal is agitated, shutting off the lights may help calm him and can make the escape route more obvious. You also can try putting a treat such as peanut butter by the exit. Never make direct contact with the animal - call a licensed rehabilitator in your area if these measures do not work.
