Stone quarries supplied the large blocks of granite, limestone, and sandstone that were used for building temples and tombs. Architects planned carefully as building was done without mortar, so the stones had to fit precisely together. Only pillars were used to sustain short stone supports. At the temple of Karnak, a ramp of adobe brick can be seen leading to the top of the temple wall. Such ramps were used to allow workmen to carry stones to the top of structure and allow artists to decorate the tops of walls and pillars. Pillars were built in the same way. As height was added, the ground was raised. When the top of the pillar was completed, the artists would decorate from the top down, removing ramp sand as they went along. As soon as a pharaoh was named, construction on his tomb was begun. Tomb building continued throughout his life and stopped only on the day on which he died. As a result, some tombs are very large and finely decorated, while other tombs, like that of King Tutankhamun, are small because he ruled as a pharaoh for such a short time. The architecture was based upon perpendicular structures and inclined planes since there was no structural assistance except the strength and balance of the structure itself. For this reason, the square and the plumb-line were very important tools.

This Pyramid Web Project poorly represents a prospectus for a book: PYRAMID DESIGN: Architecture, Art, Form, and Power . The book will include construction details, design decisions, descriptions of each pyramid, anecdotes, profiles of architects, an so on. It will explore pyramid structures from residential to massive scales. The book will also include a applications of the pyramid form to such things as stoves, awards, candles, and graphic elements. There will be a mathematical treatment of the pyramid, and a bit on its use as a theme in paintings and sculptural works I'm may not expand or keep the web pages up-to-date during the development of the book, although I may add some timely elements. The Learning Channel aired Understanding: Pyramids in January, 2001. It was a bit of a dissapointment. They had some good material but the editing was poor, and they didn't have good judgement about what to include or emphasize, in my opinion. Too much like a bad Dorderling-Kinderly book. Ron Hexum was likewise chagrined. Featured in the program was two pyramid homes in Idaho designed and built by Architect Ron Hexum . But not a virtual walk through of one of his latest design. The valley of Giza with it's wonderful monuments, is truly a marvel of architectural prowess. The three Pyramids, consist of The Great Pyramid of Khufu , The Pyramid of Kafhre and The Pyramid of Menkaura. Each Pyramid is a tomb to a different King of Egypt. All three pyramids were built during the Third and Fourth Dynasty, and were monumental undertakings of the king and the kings sons. The Pyramid of Khufu has a base which covers roughly a nine acre area (roughly 392,040 square feet). The pyramid of Menkaura, unlike the other pyramids, had one tier of it's base covered in granite. The pyramid of Khafre, had a two tier base encased in granite. Unfortunately like many of the great Kings of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, the Pyramid of Menkaura, Khufu, and Kafhre were not finished in the time of the end of the Kings reign. In the case of Menkaura, the king died before it's construction was completed. The monuments of Giza and the entire Giza valley stand as a marvelous reminder of the skill executed in the creation of the pyramids, and are truly fabulous to see.
