Extractions: (or...How to sell your ideas) As with any advice I can only tell you what worked for me, some people may have a different approach. I find now it really helps me to read about the process of creating, the process of submitting is extremely important to learn but fairly straightforward (you only need to do it a few times to get it)... Let your idea have it's own life. This sounds a little strange but what I mean by this is once you have the idea in your head don't try to control it too much. Let it tell you what form it should take. It really helps at this point to go for a long walk and just LISTEN (it may be several long walks). Let the words and images evolve. With my most recent book it took over a year for me to know what form it would take. I had ideas for content and had begun writing but no overall format to tie it all together. I didn't worry about it too much but just let it "be" for a while. One day while reading a book on "intuition in business", a concept popped into my head. This concept was "play", and it tied the whole book together and became my focus from that moment on. It helped me to really work with my intuition*, let it be my guide. *recommended reading on the subject of intuition "Anatomy of the Spirit" by Caroline Myss Really enjoy yourself and the process of creating, the best work will flow* out of you. People will respond the most to things you did with passion, (as opposed to things you forced). Don't worry about whether it would sell, or what's hot in the moment your target market, or what a family member recommends. Be honest with yourself and the process.

This book has been written for the clinician rather than the statistician and attempts to present technical information to assist in getting a medical research paper published. The content is most thorough and the important steps are laid out in order: planning, observing, writing, editing and revising. The points covered are comprehensive and the style is direct. The more important points are highlighted, which certainly enables a quick overview of the issues. There are, however, some deficiencies. The description and explanation of non-parametric statistics is insufficient, especially as it is common to have a clinical study population that is not normally distributed. The usefulness of non-parametric statistical tests could have been given much greater emphasis. The book could have been substantially shorter, a lot more readable, and with better graphics. Indeed, for a book that purports to provide guidance on how to present data, interpret data and lay out a manuscript, it brings into question the author's own ability to perform such a task! Nonetheless, it is a relatively inexpensive text and would probably be of use in medical academic hospital departments to guide the novice and reassure the experienced contributor. Guy J Maddern

And no clearer proof exists than the "standard" book contract, routinely forced upon authors and their agents. Many of the clauses that have been imposed on authors throughout the industry bear no relationship to any economic reality other than the best interests of the publisher. Kay Murray has been general counsel for The Authors Guild since 1994. "The contracts were bad enough when I got here," says Murray. "But over the past five years, they've become far more exploitative. The new technology has led to a significant decrease in cost and risk to publishers, but they simply won't share the wealth. In fact, every few months now, there's another change for the worse, with all of the major publishers acting in lockstep on it." The abuses fit into several categories. First, in contracts that are ostensibly written to assure publication, there are now clauses that, under certain circumstances, can prevent writers from being published. As for traditional options, publishing contracts now often contain several Draconian provisions. Authors must submit their next book in completed manuscript form to the publisher before it is considered by any other publisher. But the first publisher need not consider the manuscript before publication of the work currently under contract. And then, even if the first publisher declines the second project, the author must subsequently offer that publisher the chance to match any offer received at a later date from any other publisher.
