Using DNA microarray technology, expression profiles for more than 8,000 genes have now been determined from a diverse set of breast cancer samples. Specific patterns of gene expression have been revealed giving characteristic molecular portraits of tumour cells which are recognisable even after metastasis and chemotherapy. These findings may facilitate a more detailed characterisation and diagnosis of human breast cancer.
