Following the acceptance of Resolution No. 8 of the 67th General Assembly (Cairo, 1998) to advance international co-operation on the use of DNA in criminal investigations, the Interpol DNA Unit has been established. The objective of this unit is to: provide strategic and technical support to enhance member states' DNA profiling capacity and promote widespread use in the international law enforcement environment. The DNA Unit has designed the following projects to assist member states and encourage DNA profile comparison across international borders: Interpol DNA Monitoring Expert Group Field experts in forensic science and law enforcement drawn from member states across the five Interpol regions to provide expert guidance and direction for Interpol DNA profiling policy and projects. To support the DNA Unit in providing an effective platform to service the demands of member states using DNA profiling in law enforcement.

Yet while the mainstream media continues to cover police racial profiling, they have generally failed to acknowledge their own practice of media racial profiling. And when it has, the result has been more cover-up than coverage. There is need for a broader understanding of "racial profiling." As a general concept and not just a specific police policy, racial profiling may best be understood as the politically acceptable and very American practice of defining a social problem in "blackface"i.e., in racial termsthrough indirect association. Once portrayed in blackface, the "blackness" of the problem encourages suspicion, polarizing antagonism, and typically leads to the targeting of the racial group for punitive (public policy) action. The link between the stereotypical profile and the public policy is key. In police racial profiling it is direct: Individual officers act on racial stereotypes against racial minorities, especially African-Americans. Extractions: Duncan Mackenzie has too much time on his hands Back in highschool, I cut lawns for a lot of people.... so many that it was really a summer job and kept me quite busy, and then in University I took a job laying sod for a landscape company.... kinda went from the amateur level to the professional there. Both jobs were hot, dirty and left me ready for nothing but sleep at the end of a day... but I've often remarked to my wife that sometimes I long for that type of job. When you arrived at a site or a yard, it was in a bad state... it was an untidy lawn or perhaps a bare field of dirt... and at the end of the work it looked better. Not just a little bit better, but "very noticable by anyone walking by" better. I often work weeks on projects that don't produce that clear of a result... it may be better in some way, but passers-by would be hard pressed to say how... or it might not be visibly better at all, it is just cleaner under the surface or slightly more efficient.... Do I want to go back to mowing lawns or weilding a sod knife? No, but I do enjoy it when I get to work on something that fits into that model... a clear pile of work in front of me, and a noticeable result at the end. Development can be like that, although it often isn't, which may be why I enjoy it so much... but lately I get to spend less and less time coding.
