    Extractions: I am planning a trip to the Canadian Maritimes the summer of 2002. I purchased Fodors Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI guide to assist in my plans. So far, I have found this book to be a valuable resource. It is arranged first by province, then by towns/sites within each area. For example, in the Nova Scotia section, there is basic opening information about the province (its history, culture, climate, etc), then there is a large section just for Halifax. Within that listing, you find numerous places for site seeing, place to eat, to lodge, to shop. One aspect of the book I especially like is called "Off the beaten path", where you can find unusual places worth visiting. The guide is print-only, with maps, so the only thing that could make it better would be a few photographs. I would recommend this book for anyone planning a visit to the Maritimes this year.

It's gently rolling land runs between sea level to it's highest elevation of 450 feet. Summer day time temperatures range from 20 to 32 degrees C. Canada's smallest province has a rich and wonderful history that has molded the culture we share today. The Mi'kmaq were the first people to inhabit Prince Edward Island. They were a peaceful tribe, belonging to the Algonkian group. Not having permanent villages, they camped and fished along the shores during the summer. In the winter, they retreated into the forest where there was shelter, and hunted animals for food and clothing. The Mi'kmaq first called the Island Minegoo , and later changed the name to Abegweit , meaning "cradled on the waves." According to Mi'kmaq legend, Glooscap (the Indian God) wanted a cheerful place to go for his holidays, so he painted the rocks and earth of Abegweit a bright and cheerful red and set it among the brilliant blue waves of the Northumberland Strait.

The Planning Act, 1996, requires the County Council to acknowledge the provincial interest in "the conservation of features of significant architectural, cultural, historical, archeological or scientific interest". The natural heritage of the Sandbanks, the limestone cliffs, the bays and lake vistas and the abundance of wildlife, especially birds and their respective habitat, is varied yet richly concentrated within the relatively small confines of this island community. Human history is unique, and includes prehistoric archeological sites; early European settlement and transportation routes; and unusual events including the United Empire Loyalist migration, the "underground railroad", smuggling, forestry, mining, lake transport and commercial fishing. These two major categories of heritage each have their own supporters and specialists, but this somewhat academic distinction is masked by recognition that the two are inseparable: cause and effect go both ways. The Lake and the Island provided the setting for the migrations, the smuggling and the fishing; the land forms provided the basis for the settlements and their patterns, and the two combined are the basis for the culture and lifestyle in the County.

In 1996, Statistics Canada identified 1,525 Islanders as visible minorities. Between 1993 and 1997, 638 immigrants came to Prince Edward Island, including refugees and sponsored immigrants. There were 961 Aboriginal persons living in Prince Edward Island in 1997. Five hundred and thirty-two of these lived on Lennox Island and Abegweit Mi'kmaq band reserves while 429 lived off-reserve. Aboriginal persons make up the largest visible minority group in Prince Edward Island. In Prince Edward Island, ministers are appointed to various departments from the elected members of the Legislature. The Minister of Community Affairs and Attorney General is responsible for the Human Rights Act . Under this Act, the Human Rights Commission is established and its mandate is to protect human rights in the province. Amendments to the Act were introduced in 1997. The amendments provided a clear definition of who may file a complaint with the Commission. This definition includes anyone, except the Commission or its employees, who believes on reasonable grounds that the Act has been contravened. The Executive Director has expanded powers of investigation and resolution under sections 22 through 24, and there exists a mechanism whereby the Executive Director's decision can be appealed to the Chairperson of the Commission. Under the amendments, the Chairperson is able to convene a hearing before a panel to inquire into the complaint. Such a hearing will be held in public. These amendments were designed to improve the speed and quality of service and to make the Commission more accessible.

Here in PEI, the proof is in the wildly popular annual Red Cross relay, which combines running, biking and canoeing. Over 1000 persons of all ages and abilities participated in the event this year. The event includes 2-person teams, 6-person teams and a new category, a 4-person adventure team. The whole community gets involved in this fun and challenging event, with an exuberant crowd staying long after the race to compare their performance and that of fellow competitors. This and the Great Island Adventure Race, which combines mountain biking, running and canoeing, provide wonderful entry points for the budding adventure racer. You might be a little nervous about trying things like mountain biking, canoeing or kayaking - perceived by many as "extreme" sports. But with a little coaching, even the most "extreme"-sounding sports can become accessible. Try a 90-minute lesson with Prince Edward Island's own Outside Expeditions, who have introduced over 6000 people to the joys of sea kayaking and canoeing. You'll be surprised at how easy it is. Four locations in Charlottetown, North Rustico, Brudenell and Mill River offer daily afternoon and evening departures throughout the summer.
