Extractions: A third of the world's primate species now face extinction. Scientists warn that our closest relatives, the great apes, could be extinct in 20 years' time. The commercial bushmeat trade, human population growth, the tropical hardwood industry, war, deforestation and habitat loss all threaten their survival. There are probably fewer than 100,000 gorillas in world. The most endangered are the eastern or mountain gorillas. There are around 670 left, a slight increase from 620 in 1989, thanks to conservation efforts. Two isolated mountain gorilla populations remain, one in the Bwindi National Park, south-west Uganda, and the other situated near the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Uganda. Following the Rwandan civil war, a million refugees settled in camps on the edge of the Virunga National Park. Besides being a disaster for the people involved, this crisis put considerable pressure on natural resources and disrupted wildlife. Gorilla conservation programmes focus on rural development activities that promote the sound use of natural resources. Gorilla-based tourism, for example, provides a valuable source of revenue and is carefully monitored.

Extractions: The Worlds Top 25 Most Endangered Primates 2004 Mittermeier R.A., Valladares-Pádua C.V., Rylands A.B. In January 2000, Conservation International and the IUCN/SSC Primate Specialist Group released a report, prepared by William R. Konstant and Russell A. Mittermeier on behalf of Conservation International and the IUCN/SSC Primate Specialist Group, entitled The Worlds Top 25 Most Endangered Primates: a list of threatened prosimians, monkeys and apes whose survival beyond the present century will depend heavily on actions taken now by our own species. At the time, approximately 120 of the worlds estimated 620 primates were registered as being in serious danger of extinction. The Top 25 named in 2000 were merely the tip of the iceberg. The idea behind the production of this list was not merely to record the absolutely most endangered species, but to draw attention to those which are extremely (most) endangered and currently lacking national and international attention for their conservation - those most in need of research and protective measures.

Extractions: Order primates Endangered primates According to figures published by the World Conservation Union (IUCN), more than 110 species of primatesnearly half of the world's totalare currently under threat of extinction. This makes the primates among the most vulnerable animals on earth. The species most under threat are those that have been affected by deforestation. This has been particularly severe in Madagascar, the only home of the lemurs, and it is also taking place at a rapid rate in Southeast Asia, threatening gibbons and orangutans. The almost total destruction of Brazil's Atlantic rainforest has proved catastrophic for several species, including the lion tamarins, which are found only in this habitat. Primates are also threatened by collection for the pet trade and by hunting. Illegal hunting is the chief threat facing the mountain gorilla, a rare African subspecies that lives in the politically volatile border region straddling Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In the face of these threats, urgent action is currently underway to protect many of these endangered species. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) currently forbids the export of many primates, although not all countries have chosen to follow this law. More direct methods of species preservation include habitat protection and captive breeding programs. In some casesfor example, the lion tamarinthese programs have met with considerable success. However, without the preservation of extensive and suitable natural habitats, many primate species are destined for extinction.

Established in 1948 and based in Gland, Switzerland, it links together government agencies, non-government agencies, and independent states to encourage a worldwide approach to conservation. In 1993, its membership included 655 organizations, representing 103 countries. The IUCN/World Conservation Union endorses captive breeding in addition to habitat protection to maintain viable populations in the wild. Its mission is "to provide leadership and promote a common approach for the world conservation movement in order to safeguard the integrity and diversity of the natural world, and to ensure that human use of natural resources is appropriate, sustainable, and equitable." 2. How does the IUCN/World Conservation Union categorize animals? The term threatened is used to describe animals protected by the IUCN/World Conservation Union. The IUCN/World Conservation Union divides threatened animals into five categories:

Primate species and sub-species classified as "critically endangered" and "endangered" jumped nearly 63 percent from 120 to 195 since the initial report was issued in January 2000. The report was finalized during a recent gathering of the International Primatological Society, at its 19th Congress in Beijing, China. Asia now accounts for almost 45 percent of the world's most endangered primates, with 11 listed in the top 25, including six that are new additions. Africa (8), the Neotropics (3) and Madagascar (3) are home to the other primates represented on the list. These include the Sumatran orangutan of Indonesia, the mountain gorilla of Africa, and northern muriqui of Brazil.

Primates aren't the only species threatened. The wild Bactrian camel could soon take its last drink and the nomadic Saigo antelope in the deserts of Central Asia may take its last leap, joining long-departed creatures like the Dodo bird and dinosaurs. Courtesy: Anna Lushchekina The World Conservation Union's (IUCN) 2002 Red List of Threatened Species lists the world's 25 most endangered primates and more than 11,000 other plants and animals threatened with extinction. Almost 7,000 experts, working in almost every country in the world, produce the Red List. They've added 121 threatened species since 2000, and added five to the extinct list over the past two years. The union, based in Gland, Switzerland, said the freshwater gastropod mollusk shed its last salty tears. Two hippo species, the sea mink and Reunion Island Sheldgeese, were all last seen more than 100 years ago, and were added to the list after enough proof was gathered to prove they no longer exist, the IUCN said.

Extractions: By Andrew Stern CHICAGO (Reuters) - More than 130 of the world's 600 primate species are endangered, from mountain gorillas of war-torn central Africa killed for their mythical powers to orphaned orangutans from Sumatra sold into the pet trade, experts said on Thursday. But the habitat loss caused by logging, mining and encroachment by man may ultimately prove more devastating to the 138 threatened species of apes, monkeys and other primates than the outright slaughter of the animals in some cases for food or exotic medicines. ``You've got to have protected areas to ensure the survival of these animals,'' said Russell Mittermeier, a biologist with a specialty in primates and head of Conservation International. He was among 400 primate experts from conservation groups, research organizations and zoos meeting sponsored by Brookfield Zoo near Chicago to discuss primates and their survival. Fifty primate species are considered critically endangered and could become extinct within a few decades, and 88 other species are endangered, according to an analysis by the World Conservation Union, a group made up of 10,000 scientists.

Extractions: A Most Merry and Illustrated History If Monkeys are Threatened and Gorillas are Endangered, Then Why are Baboons Just Plain VERMIN? Threatened, Endangered, and Vermin Of all the primates, baboons have certainly gotten a bad rap. After all, when the scriptwriter of "The Sands of the Kalahari" wanted the bad guy to get eaten up, he called in a troop of baboons. When the creators of a popular animated cartoon series needed a moronic sidekick for an articulate and intellectual weasel, they picked a baboon. Then there's the hit prime time series where the young daughter yelled that her father was a "stupid, ugly baboon", which caused her dad to lament that she had branded him as the "smelliest and ugliest of the apes." A triple insult, considering baboons are neither smelly, ugly, nor apes. But probably the biggest slap on the snout came when the African Convention on the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources was drafted in 1968. When it came time to classify the species - whether vulnerable, threatened, or endangered - monkeys, gorillas, and chimpanzees were all dutifully listed. But just how did baboons rate? Endangered? Threatened? Vulnerable?

Orangutan mother and baby Road will split ecosystem Viable alternatives to the plan remain, but the local government of the province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) is likely to continue with its intention to construct these roads and further destroy and fragment large, and in some cases critical, parts of the habitat of these species. Furthermore, they will irreparably damage the livelihoods of the local human communities. The proposed roads will divide up what is known as the Leuser Ecosystem, a unique conservation area that is the only place in the world where the above species can still be found living side by side.
