Extractions: Assumptions pop into our heads because they're based on what we take for granted. Leave it to Lucia French to make us rethink the predictable. To Lucia's credit, she has sidestepped literacy-based models of early childhood education and has created a curriculum using science as the key to school readiness. "The daily routine and the classroom layout look like a regular preschool program, but science is the hub around which all activities are organized," said French, associate professor at the Warner School, University of Rochester . "Science meets every child's need to understand the world through active investigation." French's curriculum has aspects that are hidden and explicit. The hidden curriculum, she explained, focuses on developing social skills, attention management skills, communication and listening skills, and problem-solving skills. "The explicit curriculum is the vehicle for supporting children's development of these skills," she said. "It is an integrated curriculum with science as its core." Three- and four-year-olds are ready-made explorers. Out comes the yarn to measure the length of a table top. A few children begin unfolding a chain of soft felt handprints to see how tall Andre and Tanika are today.

Extractions: A Tool Kit for Early Childhood Science Education I n preschool classrooms around the world, children build structures with blocks, knock them over, and start again. In Cindy Hoisington's Head Start classroom in Roslindale, Massachusetts, children also build with blocks. But before they get the pleasure of watching their structures tumble, her students are documenting what they've built. Sometimes they photograph the structures; sometimes they draw them with paper and pen; and sometimes they create small-scale replicas of their large structures with foam blocks and glue. "The point is to get the kids to look at their buildings through a scientific lens, to consider the scientific properties of their structures," explains Hoisington. "The pictures provide us with a visual way to reflect back. So we've been asking questions like, how come this tower stands up and the one you made before didn't? Which way do you place the blocks to make the structure stable? How many cylinders have you used in this structure? How many in that? What would happen if we tried to build this with foam blocks instead of wood?" Hoisington and her students are undertaking this scientific exploration as part of a unique curriculum development project known as the Tool Kit for Early Childhood Science Education. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the Tool Kit project brings preschool teachers together with educators at EDC to develop a full set of quality science materials for preschool classrooms. At the end of the four-year project, the staff will also draft a set of national standards for preschool science education.

Extractions: Early Science Townsville Primary School has started interactive science classes for its pupils from Primary 1. The principal tells JANE NG why the school is doing it. By Jane Ng WHILE most schools start teaching science in Primary 3, at Townsville Primary School the pupils begin learning about it in Primary 1. If you start them early, the school believes, it will be easier to build on what the children have already been taught in preschool. The head of Townsville Primary's department of science, Mr John Ow, said: 'We looked at the kindergarten curriculum and realised that the children were already exposed to concepts like life cycles there. 'Since they come in with the knowledge, we just make sure they do not forget it by having science lessons in Primary 1.' The school's principal, Miss Chiang Wai Leng, who mooted the idea, said: 'Children are very curious when they enter primary school and it's the best time to teach them science. 'If we wait until Primary 3, they may no longer be as interested. And as science will be taught as a formal subject, it may not be as much fun for them.' While they may start earlier, the children do not have to sit for tests on the subject in Primary 1 and 2.

Extractions: [Rationale] [Goals] [Sequence of Activities] [Background Knowledge] ... [Resources] The decision to teach a unit on magnets at the first grade level is based on National Science Education Standards, Benchmarks for Science Literacy and Illinois State Goals. The National Science Education Standards state that students at the K-2 level will understand that: objects have various observable properties: the position and motion of certain objects can be altered by the pushing and pulling aspects of magnetism; magnets are capable of attracting and repelling each other and certain other kinds of materials. Benchmarks for Science Literacy support the idea of teaching magnets as a force at the K-2 level. It is stated that magnets can make some things move without any physical contact. As a result of this unit, Illinois State Goals will be met. Students will understand and apply the methods of scientific inquiry and technological design to investigate questions, solve problems and analyze claims. They will learn the principles and practices used in scientific research. They will apply the steps and methods learned to conduct practical experiments to explore, validate or refute research questions and hypotheses. In addition, they will utilize the principles of technological design to solve various problems, and use the results gained to assess the credibility of any scientific claims. Magnetism has practical uses in everyday applications. It needs to be learned as a legitimate area of physical science. The fundamental concepts and methods of magnetism will be expanded and explored throughout this unit.
