Covers immunity, life cycle of coccidia, symptoms and diagnosis, prevention, treatment and disinfection. Coccidiosis in poultry is an infestation of the intestines. It affects weight gain and feed conversion and may kill birds. Coccidiosis is common in chickens, turkeys and pheasants, less common in geese, and rare in ducks. The coccidia (the intestinal parasites) of one poultry species do not cause disease in other species. Coccidia of sheep will not infect chickens, nor will coccidia of chickens infect sheep. The infestation is caused by Eimeria species, which are microscopic protozoan parasites. The most important species in poultry are listed in Table 1 . Most infestations under field conditions are mixed infestations, with one species of coccidia dominant. No immunity is passed from parent to progeny. After recovery from an outbreak of coccidiosis, birds are usually immune to further infestation by that species, but they may still be infested by other species.

But in cases of botulism, or when food poisoning strikes infants, the ill, the elderly, or those with compromised immune systems, life-threatening complications can result. Microscopic organisms that cause foodborne illness are everywhere-in the air, soil, water, and in human and animal digestive tracts. Most are capable of growing undetected in food because they do not produce an "off" odor, color, or texture. The only way these microbes can be prevented from causing human illness is by handling and storing food safely.

Blagojevich Director The Bureau of Meat and Poultry Inspection is responsible for administration of the Meat and Poultry Inspection Act which protects the consumer in relation to wholesomeness, deceptive advertising and proper labeling of meat and poultry products. Inspection coverage includes all aspects of intrastate slaughter and processing from ante mortem (before death) inspection through slaughter and processing and to the retail level. The Bureau provided slaughter and/or processing inspection for 279, establishments and exempt poultry raisers during the previous fiscal year. The Bureau also licensed and inspects 506 Meat and Poultry Brokers. Two State laboratories located in Galesburg and Centralia perform many tests to ensure compliance with the regulations. We protect consumers by regulation, including inspection, labeling and disposition of animals, poultry, carcasses and meat and poultry products sold through commercial outlets for human consumption. We inspect and license commercial and custom slaughterhouses (which process animals for an individual and his or her family's personal use, not for retail sale) and processing facilities located in Kansas. USDA periodically verifies that our program is at least "equal to" the federal meat inspection program. At fully inspected facilities, inspection staff inspect every animal while it is still alive and after slaughter to ensure no sign of disease is missed. We allow only healthy carcasses to be marked with the Kansas Department of Agriculture inspection legend before they enter the food supply. Inspection assures that all areas and equipment in the plants are clean, sanitary and properly maintained when the daily work begins. Extractions: July 2002 PDF Version One of the keys to proper management is to never put the birds out on pasture before six weeks of age; you must wait until the birds are fully feathered and no longer need supplemental heat. In years past it was common to start day-old chicks in range shelters with coal or oil stoves but the pasture poultry shelters used today do not have stoves and birds should not be moved into them until the brooding period is completed. Modern meat-type chickens are especially susceptible to chilling and chilling has caused mortality as high as 80% in some small flocks in Manitoba. Chilling early in life can elevate mortality throughout the life of the flock. To keep the birds comfortable before moving them out to pasture, you also need to provide at least 0.1 m2 (1 ft.2) of floor space per bird up to six weeks of age. If the shelters are moved frequently and precipitation is adequate, the pasture will provide soft bedding for the birds. Because properly managed pasture is less abrasive, chickens raised on pasture may have a lower incidence of breast blisters. Moving the shelter regularly will reduce the number of droppings that the chickens eat and lower the chances that they will become infected with coccidiosis (the most common type of intestinal parasite in chickens). Since coccidia can survive eight weeks in a field, it is important to never return the birds to the same spot in the pasture in the same year. Other intestinal parasites can survive more than a year in a field and so you should never have chickens on the same field two years in a row.

Hatcheries shall comply with sanitation practices prescribed by the state of origin. This does not apply if going directly to a slaughter establishment. Poultry Shows, Sales and Swap Meets Wisconsin poultry intended for breeding and exhibition purposes and eggs intended for hatching may not be sold unless they originate from a flock that is tested for pullorum-typhoid annually or from a flock that is "U.S. Pullorum-Typhoid Clean." Poultry, started poultry or poultry eggs brought to Wisconsin from another state must originate from a flock that is classified as "U.S. Pullorum-Typhoid Clean" as provided by the National Poultry Improvement Program. The poultry, started poultry or poultry eggs must be accompanied by a certificate signed by the chief livestock official of the state of origin.
