Extractions: During the mid 1950s the ceramics department at Otis Art Institute (then Los Angeles County Art Institute) was a place of artistic vitality and innovative energy. At Otis, Peter Voulkos led a "revolution in clay" by questioning the tradition that ceramic forrns must be utilitarian and by creating instead nonfunctional, sculptural works that gave the medium a new freedom of expression. Voulkos attracted a group of talented students to Otis - which included Billy Al Bengston, Michael Frimkess, John Mason, Mac McClain, Ken Price, Janice Roosevelt, Jerry Rothman, Paul Soldner, and Henry Takemoto - who began their own searches for new forms of expression in clay. Although most did not fully develop their mature styles until after they left Otis, it was there that they absorbed many of the attitudes that shaped their thinking as artists. The ideas that informed their art are reflected in the collection of Fred Marer, who was their principal patron. Otis Art Institute

The exploration and study of antique pottery reveals the history of Taiwan's culture. Four hundred years ago, Han Chinese, who had inherited pottery-making technology from mainland China and Japan, settled in Yingko. After Japanese colonization, the introduction of western ceramics technology and modern innovative techniques upgraded and enriched the quality of Taiwan's pottery. The Taipei County Yingko Ceramics Museum occupies 4,700 pings of floor space along with 10 hectares that make up an outdoor park. With the full support of Magistrate Su and his staff as well as local pottery industry leaders and pottery artists, the Yingko Ceramics Museum has positioned itself as an entertainment venue focused on presenting multiple dimensions of the art of pottery. Today, it is decorative pottery that has replaced culinary pottery that became useless with the arrival of stainless steel and aluminium. Extractions: Raku is a Japanese inspired method of firing that creates unpredictable smoke patterns and spectacular metallic and crackle effects in the glazes. After initially firing the piece in a kiln, it is glazed and fired a second time. When the temperature of the piece reaches between 1600 and 1800 degrees and the glaze has melted, the piece is placed in combustible materials (leaves, sawdust and pine needles) in a metal container and covered. This is called post reduction during which the oxygen is burned out of the glaze taking the colorants back to a metal producing the metallic lusters seen in raku.
