Extractions: Would you attempt a Beethoven sonata after only a "few dozen easy lessons" on the piano? Probably not;yet something similar is often asked of foreign-language students who, after a few basic courses, are told to complete their acquisition of it by going out and using the language to accomplish meaningful tasks. While practice is indeed essential to language development, the student can become frustrated by attempting to use expressions and structures whose nature and function he does not well understand. Maturation of second-language skills is a gradual process which, besides constant exposure and experience, can benefit from a closer look at the aspects of foreign language structure which are un-English enough to resist assimilation. If you feel that the time has come for you to supplement 'more practice' with 'more insights' into the complex principles and processes at work in the foreign tongue, then: Welcome to your new course! LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH year course in Advanced composition and Conversation at Class participation, quizzes, notebook, homework, unit exams in French, Italian, Spanish or portuguese. http://www.southcountry.org/HIGHSCHOOL/hsdept-lang.htm
Extractions: Following the mandate of the Regents Action Plan, all students in South Country Schools begin LOTE in the seventh grade and may begin another language at any time in the High School; however, the longest possible sequence is recommended in order to achieve conversational proficiency in any language. For those students who have the ability and the time available, a third language is recommended. In the adventure of learning second and third languages students learn about foreign cultures. This expands their mental concepts in terms of new grammatical relationships, ways and means of expressing view points concerning the world around them and an appreciation of the ways other people think and live. All of these are experiences that enhance a student's understanding and appreciation of his/her own culture. French, Italian and Spanish are modern languages and are therefore taught with the major emphasis on oral communication. There is less stress on reading and writing especially in Level I.

Extractions: An intermediate course in Portuguese, "Writing and Speaking Portuguese" is designed to further improve upon students writing, speaking, and reading skills. Portuguese 10-20 or Portuguese 11 are prerequisites for the course. Survey respondents seemed to like Professor Sobral and graduate students Marilia Ribeiro and Bill Dilworth overall. Students enjoyed having three instructors, which enabled small sections and thus more practice with speaking. Because each section had roughly six students, the instructors were able to get to know each student and his or her skill level, which allowed for more effective teaching. Reviewers did not distinguish too much between the three instructors and their strengths and weaknesses, but emphasized the ability of all three to involve everyone in discussion and to motivate all to participate. Students agreed that the instructors were available for help and were sensitive to their needs and varying skill levels. Almost all the survey respondents found the short stories the most helpful and enjoyable readings in the course. Several students also cited the screenplay Terra Estrangeira as a useful reading.
