The topic awakened heated debates among intellectuals, sociologists, writers, and linguists. It was thought at the time that Portuguese culture and language would be totally submerged by the daily flood of soap operas filled wth the soft pronunciation of South American Portuguese. Portuguese intellectuals feared that the ten million inhabitants of their nation would, suddenly, begin to modify the pronunciation of their forefathers and also employ strange expressions like "estou de cuca cheia", isto é uma droga, "bater um papo", etc. More than twenty five years after the first soaps were broadcast, the influence noted is very tenuous, almost nothing. The Portuguese did not change their phonetic system and the Brazilian expressions that came into Continental Portuguese are so few that we can hardly say that our cultural identity is in danger. What has happened to defraud the most pessimistic expectations of our intellectuals? In the first place, we should say that the Portuguese people are resistant to change. Linguistic changes are an example of this. The phonetic system of Continental Portuguese, rigid and hierarchical, does not tolerate vowels and consonants that do not belong to its eight-hundred year old linguistic system. The Portuguese love to hear Brazilians speak, but unless they go to live in Brazil and pick up the local variety, they can only imitate them very poorly.

Portugal is a fascinating country with a rich cultural heritage, charming old cities, picturesque landscapes, dreamlike beaches with idyllic bays and not at least the country, where 1917 happened the wonder of Fatima , which made the city a world famous place of Christian pilgrimage. W e started our tour with a one week's round-trip by car, which gave us unforgettable impressions of life, the cultural heritage and the beauty of the country. Our itinerary lead us more than 1000 km through the country, from Faro at the southern coast up to the region around Lisbon and back to the Algarve, to Albufeira, where we spent another week. E specially remarkable and impressive were the unusual large fortresses on high hilltops, the mighty ramparts of which surround mediaeval cities, still inhabited as well as marvellous castles. Thus we often felt like taken back into the times of the Moorish conquerors and the expulsion of them by the Portuguese. O n the way we enjoyed seeing the varying landscapes - steppes, mountain chains and fertile plains with exotic subtropical vegetation. While Eucalyptus-, olive- and cork oak plantations, fruit trees and wine form the lovely picture of the countryside, palms and a lavish abundance of colourful flowers gives the white villages, the nobleman's country seats, the solaced quintas and the cities a charming flair.
