    Extractions: STU BORMAN P olymer science developments this year included advances in polymer synthesis, tailoring of polymer properties, and plastics processing. Guillermo C. Bazan of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and coworkers devised a three-component catalyst system to prepare branched polymers with structures that cannot be obtained with a single catalyst or catalyst pair [ J. Am. Chem. Soc. ]. The group's study was facilitated by a novel high-throughput screening technology developed by researchers at Symyx Technologies and Dow Chemical who used the technology to rapidly discover hafnium-based complexes that catalyze olefin polymerization [ J. Am. Chem. Soc. ]. The Symyx-Dow team found that some of the complexes performed as well as or better than Dow's workhorse metallocene polyolefin catalyst system. Science 1377 (2003)]. In the past, such efforts have generally involved expensive materials and complex, time-consuming processes. The coatings could be useful in microfluidic devices and to protect outdoor surfaces from icing or fouling.

Companies manufacture over 30 million tons of plastics each year, and spend large sums on research, development, and more efficient recycling methods. Below we learn some of the scientific principles involved in the production and processing of these fossil fuel derived materials known as polymers. Polymerization Reactions The chemical reaction in which high molecular mass molecules are formed from monomers is known as polymerization. There are two basic types of polymerization, chain-reaction (or addition ) and step-reaction (or condensation polymerization Chain-Reaction Polymerization One of the most common types of polymer reactions is chain-reaction (addition) polymerization. This type of polymerization is a three step process involving two chemical entities. The first, known simply as a monomer , can be regarded as one link in a polymer chain. It initially exists as simple units. In nearly all cases, the monomers have at least one carbon-carbon double bond. Ethylene is one example of a monomer used to make a common polymer.

The fundamental light scattering techniques involve photon correlation spectroscopy, transient electric birefringence, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching, and holographic relaxation spectroscopy. Together with time resolved simultaneous small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) techniques and other methods such as Raman scattering, we have been studying many frontier polymer research problems as stated above.
