WASHINGTON (Reuters) Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the four-term president who directed his sweeping social policies from his wheelchair, may not have been struck by polio but instead by Guillain-Barre syndrome, researchers said Friday. The symptoms of Roosevelt's illness, which first became apparent in 1921, more closely resembled those of Guillain-Barre, also known as acute ascending polyneuritis, a team at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston said. It is believed to be an autoimmune disease one in which the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. It occurs after a mild infection, surgery or, rarely, after an immunization. Either way, the diagnosis made no difference for Roosevelt there were no good treatments for either disease in 1921. He was president from 1933 until he died in 1945 of a cerebral hemorrhage.

The researchers believed that the contaminated vaccine batches were cleared up in 1963. A reader forwarded me a peer reviewed journal article discussing the legal proceedings at Lederle that suggest otherwise. I have posted the abstract of the article below: To date, the scientific literature and research examining SV40 and cancer-related diseases has been based upon an assumption that SV40 was not present in any poliovirus vaccine administered in the United States and was removed from the killed polio vaccine by 1963.

Extractions: Where can I go for more information? What is post-polio syndrome? Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a condition that can strike polio survivors anywhere from 10 to 40 years after recovery from an initial attack of the poliomyelitis virus. PPS is characterized by a further weakening of muscles that were previously injured by polio infection. Symptoms include fatigue, slowly progressive muscle weakness, muscle and joint pain, and muscular atrophy. Some patients experience only minor symptoms, while others develop spinal muscular atrophy or what appears to be, but is not, a form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig's disease. PPS is rarely life-threatening. The extent to which polio survivors will suffer from PPS depends on how seriously they were affected by the first polio attack. Patients who had only minimal symptoms from the original attack and subsequently develop PPS will most likely experience only mild PPS symptoms. People originally hit hard by the polio virus may develop a more severe case of PPS with a greater loss of muscle function, difficulty in swallowing, and more periods of fatigue.

Children's Fund said Tuesday. "No matter what the global situation, we cannot shrink from the ongoing work of reaching out to help them," said UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy. The polio program, led by the Iraqi Ministry of Health, will run February 23-27. UNICEF also is supporting a program to speed up vaccinations against measles, which kills more children than any other disease in Iraq. Although there was a major outbreak of polio in Iraq in 1999, increased vaccination has resulted in no cases since January 2000. The agency estimates that nearly 500,000 children under the age of five have not been vaccinated. One child in eight dies before the age of five in Iraq one of the worst rates in the world while a third are malnourished and a quarter have no access to safe drinking water.

Abstracts are available for most articles by following the article number links back to PubMed. The intent is simply to provide information on PPS to those who need it. As far as the list itself is concerned the abbreviations are: TI - Title of article. They are available in the specific journals listed in the SO entry line, and should be available in most medical libraries. The declaration came after no indigenous cases were registered for three years in the region, which stretches from Greenland to Turkey and across the Russian Federation and the Central Asian states of the former Soviet Union. Poliomyelitis is a highly-infectious viral disease that causes paralysis and mainly affects children. The virus is prevented by vaccination. "This is a tremendous achievement in the global effort to eradicate polio," said. Dr. Marc Danzon, Europe's WHO regional director. While the region has had no indigenous cases of polio in the past three years, children in several areas including Bulgaria and Romania have been diagnosed with polio believed to have originated from the Asian subcontinent.

Extractions: The final nail is in the coffin for the now largely refuted theory that the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) crossed into humans as a result of contamination of oral polio vaccine (OPV), according to a new study. In the April 22 Nature , Michael Worobey and colleagues report that the chimpanzees claimed to be the source of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVcpz) that crossed over actually contain a SIVcpz unrelated to HIV-1. Edward Holmes , from the University of Oxford, who was not involved in the study. The OPV/AIDS theory holds that chimpanzees from the Kisangani (previously Stanleyville) area in the Democratic Republic of Congo that were purportedly used in the preparation of OPV transmitted a SIVcpz to humans. Evidence against this has been piling up, first with the absence of SIVcpz or chimpanzee DNA in old OPV stocks and then with data suggesting HIV originated 30 years before the OPV trails. Michael Worobey The Scientist This sample turned out to be positive for gag and gp41/ nef viral sequences, confirming the natural infection of Kisangani chimpanzees with SIVcpz. Analysis of these sequences revealed that this SIVcpz virus was highly divergent from HIV-1, revealing that Kisangani chimpanzees were not the source SIVcpz that crossed over to humans.

Polio, which can maim or kill children, has been virtually wiped out in the developed world but Iraq's shattered health system makes it uniquely vulnerable. The last major outbreak there occurred as recently as 1999. Iraq's health system has suffered under sanctions Despite the imminent threat of war, Unicef is going ahead with a vaccination programme at the end of next week. In order to work it is important that all children are vaccinated at the same time which will involve 14,000 health workers going out across the country, aiming to protect millions of children. Unicef is also trying to vaccinate more children against measles.

The disease is polio a malady extinguished from most of the world but surviving in 20 countries and volunteers from the United Nations Children's Fund hope to wipe it out by 2005. The numbers illustrate the size of the task and the simplicity of the treatment: five days of synchronized immunizations, 16 million children, and two drops that will protect them from the crippling disease. The volunteers set out with coolers to keep the vaccine fresh until they reached Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon and Congo-Brassaville. Some of the children wore their finest clothes for their immunization.

Extractions: The Salk Polio Vaccine The 1950s are often considered to be a safe and quiet decade when American families moved to the suburbs, drove large modern automobiles, and enjoyed a stable and prosperous economy. But beneath this tranquil scene, parents faced a great fear-the dreaded poliomyelitis, or polio as it is commonly known. The disease had killed over thirteen hundred Americans (a large percentage were children) and crippled more than eighteen thousand more in the year 1954 alone. On April 12, 1955, American received the much-welcomed news that Dr. Jonas Salk had developed a vaccine against the frightening disease. Immediately, the federal government implemented a plan to have the vaccine produced by six licensed pharmaceutical companies and distributed to children throughout the country. Within one year, the deaths attributed to polio declined by 50 per cent, and this downward trend continues to the present when polio has been totally eradicated in most of the world. The following are documents available on the Salk Polio Vaccine: Charts and graphs with figures on polio cases in the United States:

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to drop us a note. Let us explore the question "Who has a Disability" with an open mind and heart. Is someone disabled only if you can see that they have a physical limitation? Is someone disabled by something you can not readily see or perceive? If you take a very broad brush and label anyone who has a limitation of any kind, either mentally, physically or emotionally, then everyone is disabled on some level. Why do some people feel uncomfortable if they see someone using a "tool" to help them walk or get from point A to point B? Everyone uses tools to get a job done, don't they? If someone has a physical limitation, does that automatically mean they have a less than average mental capacity? Who and what defines an individual's worth to society? We hope to explore these questions and many more with you and will look forward to hearing your thoughts on the subjects as time goes on.
