WASHINGTON (Reuters) Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the four-term president who directed his sweeping social policies from his wheelchair, may not have been struck by polio but instead by Guillain-Barre syndrome, researchers said Friday. The symptoms of Roosevelt's illness, which first became apparent in 1921, more closely resembled those of Guillain-Barre, also known as acute ascending polyneuritis, a team at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston said. It is believed to be an autoimmune disease one in which the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. It occurs after a mild infection, surgery or, rarely, after an immunization. Either way, the diagnosis made no difference for Roosevelt there were no good treatments for either disease in 1921. He was president from 1933 until he died in 1945 of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a condition that can strike polio survivors anywhere from 10 to 40 years after recovery from an initial attack of the poliomyelitis virus. PPS is characterized by a further weakening of muscles that were previously injured by polio infection. Symptoms include fatigue, slowly progressive muscle weakness, muscle and joint pain, and muscular atrophy. Some patients experience only minor symptoms, while others develop spinal muscular atrophy or what appears to be, but is not, a form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig's disease. PPS is rarely life-threatening. The extent to which polio survivors will suffer from PPS depends on how seriously they were affected by the first polio attack. Patients who had only minimal symptoms from the original attack and subsequently develop PPS will most likely experience only mild PPS symptoms. People originally hit hard by the polio virus may develop a more severe case of PPS with a greater loss of muscle function, difficulty in swallowing, and more periods of fatigue.

Children's Fund said Tuesday. "No matter what the global situation, we cannot shrink from the ongoing work of reaching out to help them," said UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy. The polio program, led by the Iraqi Ministry of Health, will run February 23-27. UNICEF also is supporting a program to speed up vaccinations against measles, which kills more children than any other disease in Iraq. Although there was a major outbreak of polio in Iraq in 1999, increased vaccination has resulted in no cases since January 2000. The agency estimates that nearly 500,000 children under the age of five have not been vaccinated. One child in eight dies before the age of five in Iraq one of the worst rates in the world while a third are malnourished and a quarter have no access to safe drinking water.

The OPV/AIDS theory holds that chimpanzees from the Kisangani (previously Stanleyville) area in the Democratic Republic of Congo that were purportedly used in the preparation of OPV transmitted a SIVcpz to humans. Evidence against this has been piling up, first with the absence of SIVcpz or chimpanzee DNA in old OPV stocks and then with data suggesting HIV originated 30 years before the OPV trails. Michael Worobey The Scientist This sample turned out to be positive for gag and gp41/ nef viral sequences, confirming the natural infection of Kisangani chimpanzees with SIVcpz. Analysis of these sequences revealed that this SIVcpz virus was highly divergent from HIV-1, revealing that Kisangani chimpanzees were not the source SIVcpz that crossed over to humans.
