Extractions: In America in the 1950s, summertime was a time of fear and anxiety for many parents; this was the season when children by the thousands became infected with the crippling disease poliomyelitis, or polio. This burden of fear was lifted forever when it was announced that Dr. Jonas Salk had developed a vaccine against the disease. Salk became world-famous overnight, but his discovery was the result of many years of painstaking research. Jonas Salk was born in New York City. His parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants who, although they themselves lacked formal education, were determined to see their children succeed, and encouraged them to study hard. Jonas Salk was the first member of his family to go to college. He entered the City College of New York intending to study law, but soon became intrigued by medical science. While attending medical school at New York University, Salk was invited to spend a year researching influenza. The virus that causes flu had only recently been discovered and the young Salk was eager to learn if the virus could be deprived of its ability to infect, while still giving immunity to the illness. Salk succeeded in this attempt, which became the basis of his later work on polio. After completing medical school and his internship, Salk returned to the study of influenza, the flu virus. World War II had begun, and public health experts feared a replay of the flu epidemic that had killed millions in the wake of the First World War. The development of vaccines controlled the spread of flu after the war and the epidemic of 1919 did not recur.

Dr. Haruna Kaita, a pharmaceutical scientist and Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, took samples of the vaccine to labs in India for analysis. Using WHO-recommended technologies like Gas Chromatography (GC) and Radio-Immuno assay, Dr. Kaita, upon analysis, found evidence of serious contamination. "Some of the things we discovered in the vaccines are harmful, toxic; some have direct effects on the human reproductive system," he said in an interview with Kaduna's Weekly Trust. "I and some other professional colleagues who are Indians who were in the Lab could not believe the discovery," he said. A Nigerian government doctor tried to persuade Dr. Kaita that the contaminants would have no bearing on human reproduction. "I was surprised when one of the federal government doctors was telling me something contrary to what I have learned, studied, taught and is the common knowledge of all pharmaceutical scientists that estrogen cannot induce an anti-fertility response in humans," he said. "I found that argument very disturbing and ridiculous."

In the 1950's, parents refused to let their children go to movies or go swimming for fear of catching the disease. Polio is caused by a virus that lives in the throat and intestinal tract. It is spread through contact with the bowel movements of an infected person (for instance, by changing diapers). Polio is most contagious from about 7-10 days before symptoms appear till about 7-10 days afterward. Polio Vaccination History: A 1916 polio epidemic in the United Stated killed 6,000 people and paralyzed 27,000 more. In the early 1950's there were more than 20,000 cases of polio each year. Polio vaccination was begun in 1955 . By 1960 the number of cases had dropped to about 3,000, and by 1979 there were only about 10. The success of polio vaccination in the U.S. and other countries sparked a world-wide effort to eliminate polio. Today: No wild polio has been reported in the United States for over 20 years. But the disease is still common in some parts of the world. It would only take one case of polio from another country to bring the disease back if we were not protected by the vaccine. If the effort is to eliminate the disease from the world is successful, some day we won't need polio vaccine. Until then, we need to keep getting our children vaccinated.

Extractions: These precautions were harmless, but not particularly helpful. In the past, these precautions proved very effective in stopping the spread of diseases such as influenza and plague. For three decades now, people still did not know why they were getting their disease. And for three decades now, doctors, epidemiologists, and laboratory researchers were trying to figure out how the disease was spread. Nobody has ever discovered completely how it is that polio is spread. The best evidence suggests that the virus is excreted in the stool and passed through hand to hand or hand to mouth contact by people who do not wash their hands properly or often enough. It was during the first few years of the fifties and many years before then, that health department officials continued to quarantine households, take in-depth histories of everywhere and everyone the patient had come in contact, inspect drains and garbage cans, and in general make it seem as though it was the patient's own fault that he had the virus. Although keeping track of this contagious disease continued to be of great concern throughout this time, the many health inspectors and visiting nurses could not help but admit that they really did not know exactly what they were looking for or where they might find it. Many doctors resented the amount of fuss made about polio, and complained that all of this exaggerated fear diverted attention from more serious health threats. The majority of people who had polio never even knew it. Of those who were diagnosed, most recovered with little or no disability. In 1952, the worst epidemic year, three thousand people died from polio, while in 1950, thirty-four thousand died of tuberculosis.

Thousands of health workers and volunteers fanned out across the country, going door-to-door to give all children under the age of 5 the two drops that will protect them against the crippling disease. Carel de Rooy, UNICEF's representative in Iraq, said the campaign is routine and has nothing to do with a possible war. "This was planned months ago. Every year we do this," he said after visiting a dispensary. "What we are doing here over the next five days is just to maintain a polio-free Iraq." UNICEF has been working for six years to rid Iraq of polio, helping train 14,000 volunteers and contributing $500,000 to the effort, most of it donated by the European Union. UNICEF also supports a program to speed up vaccinations against measles, which kills more children than any other disease in this Arab country, and is trying to improve nutrition for Iraqi children, a quarter of whom are malnourished. A week before the campaign began, the Health Ministry began an advertising campaign on radio and television, and mosques' loudspeakers urged people to take their children for vaccination.

More than 1.3 million public health workers, teachers and volunteers, carrying nearly 200 million doses of the anti-polio vaccine, fanned out to remote villages and urban slums where the virus is easily spread due to crowded conditions, poor sanitation and hard-to-reach communities. Parents in the capital, New Delhi lined up with their children at nearby hospitals and camps run by health workers. The campaign aims to vaccinate every unprotected child under 5 in India during the six-day program that will help international efforts aimed at wiping out the crippling disease by 2005. "It's a war we're winning, but it's not over yet," Dr. Carl Tinstman, a UNICEF polio expert, said in Geneva on Wednesday. Polio usually strikes children under 5. It can cripple the spinal cord and brain, causing paralysis and sometimes death. It is transmitted through food or water contaminated by the fecal matter of an infected person.
