Botswana Is Becoming A Disease Ridden International Polecat 29/8/02 Botswana is becoming a disease ridden international polecat. to the conclusion thatBasarwa were moved either to make way for diamonds or wildlife and tourism. http://www.survival-international.org/bushman_press_gazette4.htm
Extractions: This editorial appeared in the Botswana Gazette, 29 August 2002 Botswana is becoming a disease ridden international polecat IT is lamentable that the government has allowed the controversial resettlement of Basarwa to degenerate into an international human rights issue with the potential to sour Botswana's diplomatic relations with some of the country's traditional development partners. For reasons best known to itself, the government has throughout the process not come out with convincing reasons why it has moved Basarwa from the CKGR. Statements made by members of the European Union that government has been less than sensitive in relocating Basarwa are disturbing. These statements come less than two weeks after the former American Ambassador to Botswana, John Lange, said conditions in the new camps are appalling and in the long term unsustainable, while the government continues to argue otherwise. It is disturbing to hear that Basarwa in the CKGR complain of forced removal, while the government persists with the apparent myth that all resettlement was voluntary.

Extractions: All seems quiet, so you slide your shoes off and venture into the bathroom. After some stealthy hopping and shimmying your clothes are lying on the tile floor. You consider sneaking into the bedroom to drop them into the hamper. You haven't heard anything from tthere. They must be sleeping. You peek out the bathroom door, looking right and left, then dash into the bedroom. You stumble, but do not turn on the light. It might wake them. With a silent whoop of victory you slam-dunk your dirty clothes into the hamper and smugly begin to return to the bathroom. A long black tail disappears under the bed. You are alarmed, suspicious. What's missing? You look around... "My insole! I'll get you, Sebastian, you rotten weasel!" Your naked butt is sticking up into the air as you reach under the bed to retrieve your stolen insole. A mocking chittering noise issues from beneath the bed. It's too far under for you to reach and he knows it. Maybe you should just let him have it. Chomp! Tiny teeth tickle the tender part of your foot.

Striped Polecat Striped polecat. Appearance While foraging the polecat also pushes its snoutinto soft soil or plant litter to locate invertebrates. Breeding. http://www.krugerpark.co.za/africa_striped_polecat.html
Extractions: Honeymoon Safaris Polecats are close relatives of the African weasel, but differs in that it is larger, the coat hairs are longer, and that it has three characteristic white dots on the head. Head and body length is about 350 mm as an adult, with a 200 mm tail. Weighs between 640 and 1000 gr. The pelage of the upper parts of the body is black and white striped, with long hair. Top of the head and rest of the body is black. There are three white spots on the head, one situated in the center of the head and one above each eye. They have bushy tails. Feeds mainly on rodents, but almost any small animal prey such as snakes, lizards, scorpions, spiders, centipedes and insects may be eaten. While foraging the polecat also pushes its snout into soft soil or plant litter to locate invertebrates. Breeding season extends over spring and early summer, only one litter consisting of one to three altricial young are born per season. Gestation period is 36 days. Copulation can last 60-100 minutes. The canine teeth of young appear at 33 days and the eyes open at 40 days. Subadults are able to kill small rodents at nine weeks, and young are fully grown by 20 weeks of age. Except when mating, both adult males and females occur singly. Female and young of the year remain together until her young are almost fully grown. At present it is not known whether this species, like the African weasel, is territorial.
