Extractions: The Republic of Poland is located in Central Europe. It borders Germany to the west, the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south, and Russia, Lithuania, Belorus and the Ukraine to the east. The Baltic Sea defines its northern border. Warsaw is sited upon the Vistula - Poland's largest river. It flows northwards, from the mountains towards the Baltic Sea, thus cutting the country into two parts. The second largest river is the Odra, which forms the border between Poland and Germany. Poland is a country with varied topography. The Sudeten and Carpathian Mountains stretch along Poland's southern borders. The Sudeten belong to the oldest mountainous massifs in Europe. Their highest peak is Mount Sniezka - 1,602 meters above sea level. The Carpathians are younger. The Tatra Range makes up their central part - it is the only portion of Polish mountains of the alpine character. It contains Poland's highest peak - Mount Rysy at 2,499 meters above sea level. Hundreds of lakes are hidden away in the northern part of the country, in the Pomeranian and Mazurian Lakelands where countless lakes are found amidst picturesque hills and beautiful forests. The largest one is Lake Sniardwy, which occupies a surface area of 109,700 hectares. Further north are the sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea. Poland's major ports on the Baltic coast are Gdansk, Gdynia and Szczecin.

Geography And Ethnic Geography Of The Balkans To 1500 Even the geographic extent of the Balkan region is a matter of controversy. only the Communist states and linked them with Czechoslovakia, poland and East http://www.lib.msu.edu/sowards/balkan/lecture1.html
Extractions: Twenty-Five Lectures on Modern Balkan History Lecture 1: Geography and ethnic geography of the Balkans to 1500 Preface Complete list of lectures Next lecture One can't understand the Balkans without understanding its ethnic groups, and one can't understand the ethnic groups and their history without knowing the influence of the region's geography. Even the geographic extent of the "Balkan" region is a matter of controversy. Many scholars, especially those writing in the Cold War era, have included only the Communist states and linked them with Czechoslovakia, Poland and East Germany, while omitting Greece and ignoring Turkey and the Ottoman era. Other historians exclude Hungary, Croatia and other Habsburg lands, because of their "central" European character, supposedly contrary to Balkan themes. But the presence of contradictory themes is itself characteristically Balkan. For the purposes of this course of lectures, the Balkan area includes Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Romania, Albania and Hungary. Most of this area was once under Ottoman Turkish rule; the rest under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The lectures will not deal with all of the Ottoman Empire, which extended into Asia and Africa, or other former Habsburg lands such as Czechoslovakia and parts of Poland. Balkan geography revolves around three features: the area's situation as a peninsula, its mountains, and its rivers.

High-quality Products | Magazines | NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC In 2002, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC was awarded magazine of the year by Media Marketing Polska , poland s leading industry service. http://www.guj.de/en/produkte/zeitschrift/zeitschriftentitel/national_geographic
Extractions: Print NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ( POL ) NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, the internationally renowned magazine with the yellow border, which is read by over 50 million people month after month, has been published in the respective national languages in Germany, France and Poland since September 1999. The Netherlands edition was added in September 2000. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, established over 100 years ago in the USA to "increase and intensify knowledge of geography", is still deemed as the qualitative standard for journalism and photography. Every feature in the magazine, whether it be about the animal kingdom, geography or science, is a work of journalism in the original sense of the word and the result of often month long production and selection processes. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC is not a passive viewer but an active participant in the different subjects treated in the magazine. Thus, many of the features therein were only made possible through research efforts backed by the National Geographic Society. The discovery of Machu Picchu, the discovery of the Titanic, animal studies by Diane Fossey and Jane Goodall, to name but a few, have inseparable ties to the name NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC.
