But today is different. Occasionally something happens to shake me into awareness of this place. Imagine a forest, with trees 50m tall, with hot springs, and lakes and rivers. Imagine strange mammals : pigs as large as hippos, elephants with four tusks. A small chimpanzee-sized hominid swings among the trees, then settles on the ground. It stands, and walks like a human . This hominid is called Orrorin tugenensis, and is possibly our oldest known ancestor. "Orrorin" means "original man" in Tugen, and the specific name "tugenensis" refers to the Tugen Hills where the material was discovered.

For 60 years young women left Killeshandra to bring education, health care and, most important of all, the Christian message to the African peoples. Through their courage, their total commitment, their dedication, they have made an enormous contribution to the development of many third world countries. The full extent of this contribution may never be fully appreciated or recognized. For these brave women, their journey began in Killeshandra. They were members of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, and their convent, the mother house of the order, was situated a few miles outside of the town. At its peak the order was the largest missionary congregation for women in Ireland. Throughout the length and breadth of Ireland the sisters were simply and affectionately known as the ' Killeshandra nuns '. To tell their story is to tell the story of some of the bravest and most dedicated women ever to leave these shores.

The success of this social movement, and the interest in the subject of human rights at the international level was clearly expressed in the world conferences held recently: The second International Indigeneous Women's Conference, Karasjohka (Norway) 1990; the World Conference on Human Rights, Vienna (Austria) 1993; the Social Summit, Copenhagen (Denmark) 1995; the fourth Women's World Conference, Beijing (China) 1995; The First International Indigenous Women's Conference, Adelaide (Australia) 1988. When the thirtheen United Nation's working group on the indigenous population was held in Geneva in 1995, only three of the thirty African delegates present were women. The absence of the African indigenous women in these international meetings shows that they lack the apportunities to express their points of view and their interests at the international level. The indegineous people in the entire continent find themselves in a situation of marginalisation and isolation. Although this situation is present in any indigenous organization in Africa, the indigenous women meet other obstacles related to their status of woman in the dominant community as well as in the traditional community. The goal of the first African Indigenous Women's Conference is to put an end to this isolation.
