This is a question that philosophers and poets have asked themselves for thousands of years and have yet to definitively answer. The most widely used definition of an image these days is: "...an intellectual and emotional complex in an instant of time." (Ezra Pound) But this definition from Pound has a history to it. Before Pound outlined his definition, the image was seen very differently by most people. Therefore, the question "what is an image?" immediately breaks down into three fundamental parts: 1) Where do images come from?

The Unknown Patton Chapter Fourteen (Patton's Poetry) CHAPTER FOURTEEN. Patton s poetry. GOD OF BATTLES (1943). And a rope around my neck. And still later as a general. Have I galloped with Murat. http://www.pattonhq.com/unknown/chap14.html
Extractions: CHAPTER FOURTEEN Patton's Poetry GOD OF BATTLES (1943) From pride and foolish confidence, From every waking creed, From the dread fear of fearing, Protect us, Lord, and lead. Great God, who, through the ages, Has braced the bloodstained hand, As Saturn, Jove, or Woden Has led our Warrior band. Again we seek thy council, But not in cringing guise, We whine not for thy mercy, To slay; God make us wise. For slaves who shun the issue Who do not ask thy aid, To Thee we trust our spirits, Our bodies, unafraid. From doubt and fearsome bodings Still Thou our spirits guard, Make strong our souls to conquer. Give us the victory, Lord. A SOLDIER'S BURIAL (1943) Not midst the chanting of the Requiem Hymn, Nor with the solemn ritual of prayer, Neath misty shadows from the oriel glass, And dreamy perfume of the incensed air Was he interred; But in the subtle stillness after fight, And the half light between the night and the day, We dragged his body all besmeared with mud, And dropped it, clod-like, back into the clay. Yet who shall say that he was not content, Or missed the prayers, or drone of chanting choir

Extractions: of Melbourne, Australia. Our three adult children - Angela, Andrew and Kirsty - are now all married. Angela and Andrew are married to Mathew and Hayley, respectively. At the time of writing, Andrew and Hayley have three beautiful girls and Angela and Mathew's first born, Aimee, is a whole three monthd old - and absolutely gorgeous!!!!! And just two weeks ago Kirsty, our "baby", married Simon in a lovely Christian wedding, followed by a very happy and moving reception. We are quite enjoying the life of 'Darby and Joan' and the freedoms it allows. We're also fortunate that our children all live in Melboune, with two living only a few kilometres away. Also "Ginger", our little Jack Russell-Chihuahua cross - a delightful 'people loving' dog - has totally stolen our hearts and helps fill the absence of children at home in a lovely way.
