Extractions: heritage area Plants in the Wet Tropics - General Information The word 'rainforest' is an umbrella term for a great variety of forest types with different structures and collections of species. The forest type is dictated by environmental parameters such as altitude, soil composition, amount of rainfall and drainage. The Wet Tropics provides an unparalleled living record of the ecological and evolutionary processes that shaped the flora and fauna of Australia over the past 415 million years. Australian has been isolated from other land masses for millions of years and this has helped shape our distinct floral and faunal assemblages. Humid tropical regions throughout the world are relatively new and although they are rich in numbers of species, the level of endemism is surprisingly low. (Endemic species are those which are restricted to a certain area and occur nowhere else.) About 3,000 plant species from 210 families are found here, representing about 17% of Australia's vascular plants.

Extractions: by Roberta and Fred Case Sphagnum moss makes an ideal substrate in which to grow some of the showy and more difficult bog and swamp plants, especially carnivorous plants and certain native orchids. And sphagnum moss is attractive in itself. Sphagnum moss requires a constant source of suitable water. Chlorinated or very limey water kills it. However, placing it in a bog next to a pond can solve the water problem. Growing it on neutral or acid sand is a suitable substrate. LOCATION: Full sun, if possible. The sphagnum doesn't need it but many of the showier bog plants do. Area should not collect run off from lawn or other areas. You want only the pond water to enter the bog. A long and narrow bog garden is easier to maintain than one that is too wide: 2 arm's lengths is a good width. It facilitates weeding! One arm's length if you do not like to wade and weed from the pond side. MATERIALS: Plastic or rubber liner for the bog or the pond and bog. Swimming pool liners can be used but do not last. 45 mil butyl rubber is very good. It is durable (20 years plus) and yet molds well to the sides. It is readily avaialable from roofing companies. However, their stock may kill fish for a few months. Sand. The bog needs to be only 6 to 8 inches deep. the sand fill should be 1 to 3 inches above the usual water level. Limey sand should not be used. No organic material is needed in the sand.

Seventy-eight of Australia's 190 species occur here. One of the most common families is the Rainbowfish which is found throughout the area, except around Cape Tribulation. Another widely distributed small fish is the Pacific Blue-eye. Larger species found in the coastal reaches of Wet Tropics rivers include Jungle Perch, Catfish, Sooty Grunter and Mangrove Jack - all popular among recreational anglers. The numbers of endemic fish (species that occur nowhere else) are surprisingly low. Only eight Wet Tropics endemic species have been identified so far, but this could change radically if more taxonomic work was done. The streams of this area contain many barriers to fish migration (such as waterfalls at one end and saltwater at the other) so that many watercourses are somewhat 'independent'. Such isolation often leads to a high level of endemism, at least to the subspecies level if not the species level. Unfortunately, there haven't been many studies of northern fish apart from those with a demonstrated commercial or recreational value.

The aim of this project was the investigation and the evaluation of the parameters that contribute to activated sludge bulking in nutrient removal wastewater treatment plants. More specifically the study included: wastewater characterization in various WWTPs in Greece and specifically as it concern the bio-dig ration of organic load. The survey included 10 WWTPs (Alexandroupolis, Ioannina, Chalkida, KLM, Karditsa, Larissa, Lamia, Livadia, Rethimno and Thessaloniki). In addition to this the survey included three pilot plants (Kerefyt A1, A2, A3). Wastewater characterization was conducted systematically in the case of the influent to the pilot plants and sporadically for the influents to some of the full scale treatment plants sludge characterization in various WWTPs in Greece and specifically the evaluation of the sludge bulking (Filament Index, SVI), the types and the number of the filaments as well as the flock characteristics. Microscopic analysis of sludge samples was performed every two months on average. the operation of pilot plant which contributed to estimate the parameters such as Dissolved Oxygen, Organic load, wastewater characteristics, wastewater temperature and the types of filaments

The recommendations are based on our Northern California climate and soil conditions and are very general guidelines. For other areas, timing and fertilizing schedules may vary. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail us Most shrubs and trees should be fertilized at least once in the Spring and again in the early Fall(late Summer). Some plants will benefit from an additional application of fertilizer in the early summer. We recommend using Master Start (5-20-10 with micronutrients). If you want to stimulate growth, we recommend the Master Nursery Multi-Purpose Fertilizer(16-16-16). Shade loving plants prefer a fertilizer that contains sulfur and iron as well as other trace minerals. Plants that would fall into this category are azaleas, camellias, gardenias, rhododendrons, ferns, and other shade loving plants. For shade loving plants, we recommend fertilizing at least once in the Spring, once in the Summer, and once in the Fall with Master Nursery Azalea, Camellia, Gardenia Food. If you prefer a liquid fertilizer(water soluble), then you will need to fertilize once a month from Spring through the Fall. While many shrubs don't require heavy feeding, we suggest that you add some additional minerals to your plant once or twice during the Winter. We recommend Greenall's F.S.T.(iron, sulfur, manganese, and zinc). By applying these minerals during the winter months, you are helping build up the necessary nutrients that your trees, vines, and shrubs will need in the Spring as they emerge from dormancy.
