Thanks to the passage of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and the inclusion of plants for the first time, the State of Oregon has been keeping a list of rare, threatened, and endangered plants since the 1979 publication of Rare, T hreatened and Endangered Vascular Plants in Oregon - An Interim Report . Early in 1980 a computerized data bank of Oregon's rare and endangered animal and plant species, the Oregon Natural Heritage Data Base was established in the Oreg on field office of The Nature Conservancy. Conferences have been held regularily since then in order to update the original list, the latest being held in December 1994 in Bend, Oregon. The State of Oregon recognizes the efforts of the participating age ncies and recognizes these lists. Unfortunately for some of the plant populations in Oregon (as in the rest of the world), recognition is not enough. Fortunately, the Native Plant Society of Oregon took up the task of pushing through legislation to protect these endangered plants, and in 1987 their effort was successful and Oregon Senate Bill 533 was passed. This bill put the responsibility for Oregon's native plants on the Oregon Department of Agriculture's Division of Natural Resources, headed by botanist Dr. Bob Meinke. The ODA are charged with monitoring and maintaining Oregon's threatened and endangered plant populations. Currently Oregon has five Federally listed Rare and Endangered plants. This site has a photo and a limited amount of information about four of the five, and we hope to have more information soon.

Endangered and Threatened Species Management Ecological systems remain healthy only if a diversity of plants and animals can survive and reproduce. Ecologists have long understood the importance of "keeping all the pieces." Yet, humans are sometimes unaware of the many economic and health benefits we receive as a result of the existence of diverse natural communities. The Legislature recognized this importance in 1977, saying: ...the activities of both individual persons and governmental agencies are tending to destroy the few remaining whole plant-animal communities in the state. Since these communities represent the only standard against which the effects of change can be measured, their preservation is of the highest priority. Since 1973, federal and state laws have enabled the DNR to preserve endangered animals. A 1978 state law extended this protection to include threatened animals and endangered and threatened plants. Endangered species are at risk of becoming extinct in the state. Threatened species are those which are in risk of becoming endangered. Wisconsin law also authorizes the DNR to "conduct investigations of nongame species in order to develop scientific information relating to population, distribution, habitat needs, and other biological data in order to determine necessary conservation measures." On the basis of these scientific determinations, the DNR may promulgate rules and develop conservation programs designed to ensure the continued ability of nongame species to perpetuate themselves.

As of October, 1998, Florida had 55 plant taxa listed under the U. S. Endangered Species Act as Endangered (44) or Threatened (11). The Program is funded through grants from the U. S. Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service under Section 6 of the U. S. Endangered Species Act. These grants are given as 75:25 matching funds. Each project is responsible for acquiring the project's match (25%) for the federal funds (75%). The goal of the Florida Plant Conservation Program is to restore and maintain existing populations of listed plants on public land and on private lands managed for conservation purposes. Previous or ongoing projects address demography, monitoring, reintroduction, germination, pollination, and other aspects of population ecology.
