During most of this century, taxonomy has been on the decline from its pre-eminent position in the biology of the previous two centuries. This has been true both for the public perception of its importance within biology (since it now has to compete with genetics, physiology and ecology for attention) and also for its role in undergraduate teaching in universities (where it has deteriorated to being little more than a plant identification subject). This decline is global in scale, although it has been particularly prevalent in Great Britain and the United States of America; and Australia has clearly tended to follow the same line. In many ways, the decline can be considered to have slowed in recent decades, because of the injection of new ideas (such as phenetics and cladistics) and new techniques (such as in multivariate analysis, cytogenetics, and reproductive biology). In fact, there is even the possibility that it may be feasible to stop the decline completely, given the recent enthusiasm for the study of molecular genetics and the current craze for the conservation of biodiversity. Unfortunately, just when things were looking better, institutional belt-tightening in the northern hemisphere has been going on at an unprecedented rate, and taxonomists have joined the dole queue en masse. Four factors are often proferred as being involved in the current situation:- an increased rate of attrition among taxonomists caused by retirement without recruitment; lack of systematic teaching at undergraduate level and reduced opportunities at postgraduate level; research funding methods and priorities that disadvantage taxonomy; and the perception that taxonomy is only justifiable if it involves molecular systematics. Australia has not yet reached the same parlous state, but history should tell us that it cannot be far away; and recent governmental changes in higher education are not promising.

Extractions: In this class you will learn the taxonomy and characteristics of about 30 common flowering plant families of the upper Midwest and how to identify plants using technical keys. The time will be split between the classroom and field trips. In addition to scheduled class time, I expect you to spend on average about two hours outside of class for each hour that class meets, or roughly 8 hours each week, working on your own. My goals for this course are to help you to 1) learn the characteristics of common flowering plant families, 2) learn to identify plants using taxonomic keys, and 3) gain an appreciation of the diversity and ecology of flowering plants in this region. Many days we will spend all (or at least most) of the class time outside. Come prepared for rain, poison ivy, steep terrain. Wear appropriate clothing (sturdy shoes, long pants, rain gear) for each class period, even if a field trip is not scheduled . You will also need to bring your textbooks, hand lens, and field notebook to every class.

Back Our teaching methodology lets the student to have an adequate mental image of field vegetative characteristics of tropical plant families and genera. Based on that mental image it is possible to easely learn taxonomic characteristics of such families and genera. For example, after a person knows the Rubiaceae species by their field vegetative characteristics (leaves simple, entire, opposite or whorled, connate interpetiolar stipules) he/she will easily and fast observe in the field and will learn that most of Rubiaceae, for instance, have: bisexual flowers, inferior ovary, gamopetalous corolla, 4-5 stamens adnate to the corolla. On the contrary, when a person does NOT know leaf and twig field characteristics of Rubiaceae, it will be harder for he/she to functionally learn characteristics of flowers and fruits of this family. It is noticeable that also knowledges related to species uses, geographical distribution, biological forms, relationships among plants animals and environment, etc., are easily realized and mastered after our Dendrology courses. Therefor, some professors -including myself- have started recommend the students to first learn to recognize tropical plants by their field characteristics (as we do in Dendrology courses) and, after that, take courses or study flower and fruit characteristics (as it is done in Plant Taxonomy courses).
