Extractions: 1. FINANCIAL ISSUES Every aspect of graduate education and research at the University is threatened by fiscal constraints. University operating budgets are declining. The major granting agencies are receiving less money from the federal government and as a result are making fewer grants and are granting less money. Indications are that these constraints will be felt for some time. The need will be to make do with less, which often will mean doing less with less. An implication is that, generally speaking, solutions to those problems which require new money will not be feasible. Although all of the aspects of an environment which nurtures and facilitates graduate student learning and research are threatened by fiscal constraints, the major threats concern the impact on graduate students and on the faculty members who teach and supervise them. With respect to the former, the threat is that owing to diminished funds for the support of graduate students, the better students will go elsewhere. With respect to the latter, the threat is that as graduate faculty members leave the University, they will not be replaced or will be replaced in a manner which weakens programs. This suggests that if we are to preserve the quality of our graduate programs, we will no longer be able to respond to reduced funding by making across-the-board cuts; vertical cuts and restructuring of programs will need to be explored.

It is a valuable tool for fund raising, advocacy, and simply teaching others about the American orchestra. Everyone involved with an orchestra - whether part of the administrative staff, volunteer organization, or Board of Directors - should have a copy of this book.
Extractions: It's almost a cliche at this point that whenever K5 faces adversity, whenever times look darkest, you pull out all the stops and restore my faith in humanity with a force that makes my head spin. And folks, you have done it again. In one day, you all managed to raise ten thousand dollars . I Am Not Making This Up. Individually, out of a simple desire to make sure K5 goes on, each of your few dollars here and few dollars there added up to ten grand. This is not a negligible amount. Over the same time I did a lot of thinking, and a lot of reading your comments and suggestions. I talked the situation over with my wife, and we decided that the right thing to do is take K5 non-profit. So, as of today I'm committed to making K5 a non-profit entity. What this means is that now we really need you. It's your support, or nothing. From now until June 26th (next Wednesday) we're having our first ever fundraising drive. The goal is to raise one year's operating budget: $70,000. It seems enormous, unattainable. But think that yesterday your contributions added up to $10,000. There's an awful lot of us. We can do this.

Extractions: M any of our teacher education programs require a class that has expressed objectives of preparing individuals in the mechanics of being youth organization advisors. There are also the often unexpressed, affective objectives that deal with values, integrity and professionalism. On a recent final exam in a Youth Organizations in Agricultural and Extension Education class session, a question was raised that addressed this affective area, plus strategies for planning banquets, selecting fund raisers, and preparing teams and awards applications. Students were asked to list what they believed to be the 10 most important duties and/or responsibilities of youth organization advisors. When the responses were tallied I was a bit surprised. I wondered if the responses were what the students believed enough to act upon or if they were just parroting what I had advocated when I climbed on my soap box from time to time. I think as advisors we can learn from their responses.

Extractions: DISTRICT ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT This chapter examines the Kerrville Independent School District (KISD) organization, management and planning in four sections: C. PLANNING AND EVALUATION Planning is a vital ingredient in district management. Proper planning establishes the district's mission; identifies goals and objectives; sets priorities; identifies ways to complete the mission; and determines performance measures and benchmarks to chart progress toward the achievement of the district's goals and objectives. Planning anticipates the effect of decisions; indicates the possible financial consequences of alternatives; focuses on educational programs and methods of support; and links student achievement to the cost of education. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) encourages planning by requiring district's to prepare and submit certain planning documents including an annual budget, district and campus improvement plans, technology plans, an annual report on student achievement goals, a biennial district evaluation report and a district performance report. To meet Texas Education Code requirements, the district also must form a district-level committee to develop the district improvement plan (DIP) and school-level committees to develop campus improvement plans (CIP). The district-level committee also must consult with the superintendent concerning the planning, operation, supervision and evaluation of the district's educational program as per Education Code 11.252(f).
